For as long as I can remember over 50 years or so the alley way from Dagnell Park allowed access to the rear of the station hall and a gateway that could be opened for entry at the foot of the ramp to platform one, so there were two points of entry and no problems getting in. Now the “planners” have closed off the rear access (partly with a new lift) and funnel everyone from the alley out onto the main road to enter only via the main front door. The result? Complete chaos. The queue back up the road is 100 yards long and yesterday it took 15 minutes to get into the station and as the train was due some 17 minutes after I joined the queue it was getting close. It has to be said that those queuing were on this occasion well behaved and patient. However there were pedestrians walking in the road in both directions amongst heavy traffic. And if you wanted to wait at the bus stop, good luck! Once people realise they are going to miss their train there will be pushing and queue jumping. I fear that it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident. Where is the crowd control? Where was the thought that allowed this stupid situation to arise in the first place? And what are the implications for an increase in capacity at the ground if 24000 crowds completely choke up Selhurst station?

Agree, you need to have it set up for normal use, but a couple of gates that you can swing open at match time to relieve the pressure . Norward Junction is much better managed

I don't know why they don't just open the massive gate post-match (shown with a red X on the photo below) Surely it must date back to when CPFC played at the Nest? (which was bang opposite the station) Edited by dorking (08 Nov 2021 2.09pm)

There are points there to tap in for Oyster or similar.and there is loads of room on the platforms if the staff that they do have up there just encourage people to move down.

Total joke,Opening the gate is the best solution, that bottle neck back down the alleyway is madness when it meets the others queuing up on the pavement! Well done, hopefully you'll get a reply Edited by Barcelona Based Fan (08 Nov 2021 4.28pm)

Thanks BBF they now have my email detailing the facts.I have suggested that Southern send members of their Safety Department to the station for the next home match on the 27th November between 16.45 and 17.30 to see the problem first hand. But I'm not holding my breath.

And in that connection One way to increase travel capacity from Norwood Junction is to stop the 12 carriage Thameslink trains at NJ on a Saturday.
