If he came to us and did well that would embarrass Man United and their coaching staff. If he went abroad and he did well they can always use the excuse it's not the PL.

One more point

As much as I like the idea of van de Beek joining us I don't think he's what we need right now particularly as it's reported there would be no option to buy at the end of the season (I think he'd make a great replacement for Gallagher next year).

I think our most pressing need is a CDM and Donny van de Beek is not that.

If McArthur isn't going to be fit any time soon, I think this becomes a no brainer of a loan signing.

If Gallagher or Hughes got injured now, we're looking very light of quality options in midfield to play a passing game. Riedewald and Luka clearly aren't fancied, so we basically have Kouyate, Schlupp, Hughes, Gallagher, Eze which is fine if they all stay fit and an issue if they don't. It should also help bed in this style of play - if a £35m Ajax graduate can't play it, no-one can. You'd also hope he'd be as good as any of that list and get us the points to increase that prize money.

To do well in the cup, we'll have to play a fair few midweek games and whilst VDB is cup-tied, it'd allow us to rotate out the others in league games.

The option to buy isn't all that important - we can sort out the midfield in the summer.
