I see things are going well in the EU utopia of France. Surprised Steeleye hasn't reported it.

Probably because it has precisely nothing to do with the EU as I would guess you are well aware.

Much as macron is a dick imo I think he is protecting the future generations. I mean retire at 62 and get a state pension. Life expectancy has gone up considerably in the last twenty years and there is only so much tax dollars compared to expenditure. Especially now as we are slowly being kept alive forcibly !!!!

i have a sneaking respect for the French, as they always seem to do things properly. Even demonstrations aren't the half-@r5ed efforts you see in the UK (now restricted by Law). Edited by Forest Hillbilly (19 Mar 2023 7.52am)

The issue is not so much about the wisdom or not in these reforms but the fact that Macron forced them through against the wishes of the majority of the countries elected representatives. That is why this story matters. Fascinating to read the framing of it in places like the BBC which is so Pro-Macron it might as be posing as a dark-skinned body guard. And people who seem to be the most keen on retirement age being raised are invariably those who can retire any time they want.

A Macron own goal in my opinion. His lack of judgement shows he is on the way out. The French, of course, are not just pathetic like us, if energy prices rocket they are on the streets and invariably they will come straight down. This time Napoleon has prevailed, but the battleground is the French way of life.

Life expectancy has gone up considerably in the last twenty years and there is only so much tax dollars compared to expenditure. Especially now as we are slowly being kept alive forcibly !!!! just 100 years ago, if people retired at 65, the vast majority were dead by 68. The World has changed beyond all recognition. In the past, a fella was an adult working with a shovel at age 17. Often with his own home , wife and kids on the way. Today, the same fella lives with his parents at age 40 and will inherit when he is 50. And his mum could well make it to 92. The mathematics of pensions is the tricky part. Which is why people in Africa have a dozen kids.....to mind them when they are elderly (55) Edited by PalazioVecchio (19 Mar 2023 11.05am)

Granted but being realistic how many years before pension wise you are a net taker.

The issue in France is not the maths. Pensions are potentially going to destroy the West along with the wider question about are we actually enabling people to live to long thus absorbing huge amounts of national resources. A definite debate needs to be had. But Macron chose to impose this on the French people. The much much bigger issue.
