Giving up the TV license was a particular highlight of this year.

All the manipulatory techniques and half truths they use to keep you on board is particularly unethical....quite surprising that it's legal.

I got a 1500 fine last year. I wonder what's in store this year? Best sharpen my toothbrush and take up smoking rollies. I won't pay the fine either. My TV is just the government mouthpiece. Actually makes 1984 look like light entertainment.

1500 ASCP? Or 150? The latter sounds about right, if they should fine you at all! The former sounds like your tv was stashed with 2 k of the white stuff!

For the best advice with dealing with license fee 'inspectors' visit this link here.

You are under no obligation to let them into your house nor any obligation to speak to them when they visit. You can say, 'no thank you' and close the door and they have to leave.

Big fines here mate, and no excuses. Having any device with a picture is enough. We have to pay Ryan Tubridy's wages. As I say, don't particularly care, as I won't pay anyway.

The biggest thing I notice is the death of comedy.

Thank God for Youtube, I can get my fix from the 80s and 90s there.

I think John Cleese said that the BBC does not make comedy programs anymore.

And it does appear that the celebrated British sense of humour is in decline, something I never thought possible.

Something to do with censorship? No point watching old programmes if they have been edited so not to offend.
Even watching old westerns you are advised it may contain discriminatory language. More recent stuff has no chance

I recall reading somewhere & not sure how actually true it is that those TV detector vans are basically a front & they probably have all your relevant information anyway?
It reminds of back in the 80s when I was working a lot away from home, I forgot to renew my licence & got caught.
I had to appear in front of the magistrates court & was asking people when they came out how much they were getting fined & pretty much all of them said 400 quid !!
So in I goes & pleaded guilty but told them that I was working away from home & had genuinely overlooked paying the licence fee I also told them that I didn't have a Colour TV but a B&W one.
The two TV guys looked at each other puzzled & whispered someting to the prosecution solicitor? I got fined 30 quid !!!!!

Is there anything like TV licensing over in the states?

I think you could not get Monty Python Blackadder The Young ones etc. past the lawyers.

But there really don't seem to be any comics anyway - Morecambe and Wise Tommy Cooper Mike Yarwood Benny Hill I could go on and on - but I really can't see anybody at all at present remotely funny.

It must be due to brexit.
