Comments on here are surprising me. The bloke has barely had a game and the one time he did start, he scored a beauty against the Weed.

He’s 24 and has never played in the Prem. He needs time to adapt to the game and needs a run in the team before we can really judge him. People on this thread saying we can’t can’t afford this luxury of persevering with him, as if it’s easy to sign a 15 goal a season striker.

Quality strikers are few and far between and the proven ones cost mega bucks which we don’t have. A club our size needs to gamble on players like Mateta in the hope that they are the next Pelle or Michu. Give the lad a chance before writing him off.

Palace hierarchy learnt from previous striker transfer exploits. We paid big money for Tekkers whilst not a total disaster it didn't quite hit the big hopes they would have liked.

So they then looked to try to bring in young players with potential like Sorloth but the risk with that is you can't guarantee they will be worth it as was the case with Sorloth (I really don't think anyone realistically predicted the bizarre Trapnzonspor/Leipzig ending that was Sorloth's Palace career).

So they went for the Mateta approach. Got him on loan with an agreed fee at the end if he `cut the mustard`. Think we paid something like 3.5mill for the loan, which for 18 months is not too bad as cover. The debate is if he is worth paying to sign fully (IMO he isn't) but it did give us chance to assess him. I don't think we have really lost in this.
