Even in the unlikely scenario where we judge that the Taliban were even handed about 9/11 in what universe do you think they were going to hand Bin Laden over to the US?....Anyone who knows anything about the Taliban would know that this would be impossible. They weren't interested in evidence. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was the architect over the plan for 9/11. Bin Laden actioned and sanctioned the event allowing the resources to enable it. It's about the organisation. Saudi Arabia? Terrible country and worthy of a thread to itself over its horrible influences around the world. It does fund extremism but the reasons why the US and Saud are frenemies is complex. Qatar, is the same to a smaller extent....I'll say three words...Iran and oil. However, the house of Saud was not behind 9/11.....Bin Laden had been attacking the house of Saud for years.....I think you need to look into the actual realities.....There are many anti Saud extremists in Saudi Arabia....Bin Laden was one himself.
Think I've read enough about it to have an opinion while I wouldn't consider myself an expert. Happy to disagree. Knee jerk violent reaction to a bloody nose that has achieved very little other than create even more animosity toward the west. More violence doesn't rectify any past atrocities and the suffering and pain that they've created. You don't beat an ideology by fixating on an individual, even it does give a nation a fuzzy feel good factor. I do respect your opinion and your points though. Back on topic I find it amazing that several interviews I've heard from the states with locals suggest the problem is with hotel security and ignoring the elephant in the room of liberal gun ownership. Guess that's just the national psyche.

A lunatic in hotel room without 23 assault rifles will kill less people than a lunatic in a hotel room with 23 assault rifles. For a nation to stick their head in the sand and pretend that access isn't an issue is incomprehensible.

...and then there's John Thune, a duly elected Senator from the state of South Dakota. “I think people are going to have to take steps in their own lives to take precautions. To protect themselves. And in situations like that, you know, try to stay safe. As somebody said — get small.” [Link] This actually captures it perfectly, in lieu of gun control, this Congressman, at least, offers the sage advice of James Coburn in (appropriately) A Fistful of Dollars: "Duck you sucker!"

Have to say that the Yanks do seem to lack any sort of common sense. Voting for Trump, no real gun controls, no decent health provision for poorer people. You hear them talking politics (all sides - including the actual politicians) and they are like children in their simplicity. Mind you as super powers go, they could be a lot worse. The gun crime in Chicago is unbelievable. When I was recently in the States, they had 14 killed in one night... all separate incidents.

I'm not sure what this says about the rest of America, but Chicago isn't some dystopian nightmare that only Snake Plisskin could survive. Someone is killed by a gun every 15 minutes here, though, which is pretty hard to wrap your head around.

The reason people don't have private tanks is because they aren't available to buy.....or maybe I'm wrong about that. I agree up to a point. I could probably buy a gun myself within an hour or so & I live in libral NYC where the gun laws are quite strict

The logic to me, would appear to be, guns aren't the problem people are. The logical solution, to prevent people owning guns, without strict regulation (such as seen in the UK). Its notable that both Japan and Canada have surprisingly lack gun rules and not the same problems as the US. And I think its probably true, the people are the problem, both the politicians, the advocates and the general gun owners. Edited by jamiemartin721 (04 Oct 2017 9.52am)
