That's a nonsense. Work it the other way round, we've lost enough already this season with Croydon Roy's negativity taking centre stage. And once again the lack of timely subs almost handed the game back to the opposition, and we're waiting on the fitness of our star player, all because Croydon Roy doesn't use his bench in a timely and sensible manner.

Was Olise injured at the end ?

Yes. Unfortunately I think it looked like he had picked up a knock. Wrap him in cotton wool with a 3 week break until the Arsenal game.

1) Keeping Mateta on the bench for so long this season – as he watched Edouard scoring – may have motivated him to work harder and play better than he ever has. He was a pleasure to watch today.

2) Ayew may be the greatest bargain in the League in terms of (value to his club)/(salary).

3) Olise's work rate continues to impress, along with everything else.

4) Hughes and Franca should have come on at least 10 minutes sooner.

5) Solid play by Mitchell and Clyne minimized the work needed from Andersen, Guehi, and Richards.

6) Referee seemed more fair and consistent than in many matches.

I can’t disagree. I thought the ref had a good game and tried to let it flow for both sides. Mateta’s hold up play has improved immeasurably, but he only seems to be able to last 70 mins. He was walking through treacle the last 10/15 mins he was on the pitch.

Some observations.

1. Lerma worries me, all action but clumsy tackles will get him
booked, has been lucky in last few games.
2. Will we ever score from a corner? Most others manage it but we
haven't yet, what headers we do have are mostly by
Andersen. Neither Mateta or Edouard are good in the air.
3. Brentford brought on all 5 subs which gave them fresher legs and
put us under pressure in the last 15 minutes. The manager moans
that his bench is not strong but his tactic is wearing us out,
makes us liable to injuries and makes us susceptible to late
goals.
4. Good effort today but not happy with Hodgson. We need younger
blood who can utilise, motivate and bring on our youngsters.

Have to say Mateta was terrific again today.. I think he’s been working hard on holding the ball up for others.. will keep Odsonne on the bench for a while…

I note with interest that those commentators keen to defend Roy against criticism of his tactical approach often use strawman arguments to deflect from the point in question. If for example it is shown that statistical evidence suggests that the late goals we are prone to conceding are linked to our manager not keeping up with the opposing manager's substitutions, which gives the opposing side the benefit of fresh legs against our quite visibly tiring players, then these commentators will, rather than address the very valid point made, will retort with something like, "well what would you have done", or "well who should be manager then" or other such frivolous nonsense.

He looks much more like a standard centre forward than Edouard. I don’t care if he doesn’t score bundles of goals if he holds up the ball like he did today. Great performance and good effort put in, although he obviously struggles to manage 90 minutes. If I had a criticism it’s that for his height he is not dominant enough in the air.

True. I’m happy to debate with others however you can’t debate strawman arguments.

Indeed. I don’t think I have seen a CF that can’t jump before. But he is improving every game.
