Having digested the news and given it some thought. I think the problem a lot of people had was in the fact they didn't like Hilary Clinton. Saw her as a throwback to the Bill Clinton era and didn't want it. I wonder how much of Trumps campaign was bluster and grand standing. He for one probably never thought he would actually win. Watched His acceptance speech on tv this morning and two things struck me. His body language was completely different. Much calmer , subdued if anything and the tone of his speech was much different to the rallies of the past few weeks and months. I don't like the man and wouldn't have voted for him myself and I am shocked he has won. But I don't think he will he as bad as people think he will be. As another poster said upthread he probably won't be as good as the republicans hope either. could end up being a bit of a lame duck or toothless tiger. On paper he represents all that is wrong, the shouting sexist, racist, bloated greedy businessman stepping on people to get where he wants to be , whilst holding a gun and ye hawing. But I think Americans need to ask themselves some questions and take a long hard look at why after 8 years of democrats and Obama they have rejected all of that and gone so far the other way.

Hmm, you seem to have an agenda.

I suspect America will look back at the Obama days and wake up to the fact he did a surprisingly good job in the face of massive opposition. He is also an especially cool bloke.

Now counter-pose The Donald...

I know it's actually impossible to say as he's not even been sworn in yet but from a gut instinct point of view does anyone think .
1. That trump will get a second term?
2. He will be assassinated?

Just curious to hear what people think

Where do I seem to have an agenda? It's a rational thought. A vote for Trump, in my view, is a vote for change, any change, driven by a mass public disenchantment with politics and perceived corruption at top-level Government, business and media. I think Americans (who voted for him) think Trump will come in, shake things up, and the anti-Clinton feeling can't be underestimated.

So, if Obama had united communities and rung some changes of his own, then surely people would want to keep his party in power no?

You're obviously very pro-Obama if you think he's especially cool.

You're totally right. It's hilarious that many of you are condemning him for his social skills and his temperament when it's his political views that actually matter, and in the end they have aligned with most of America. FS you are correct and the fact that many black voters failed to support Clinton shows that obama failed miserably at the promises he made in 2008

If you don't understand now that Presidential elections are all about personalities more so than politics then you never will. If Obama were able to run for a third term he would have walked it against Trump.

Even deeply Republican Kentucky will vote for a Democrat nominee if he is from the Deep South a la Carter and Clinton.

Hillary was simply the very wrong choice. The Gordon Brown of Democrat history.

That's democracy for you. The question is whether he can survive potential fraud charges over Trump University and a law suit for sex with a minor, which are on the immediate horizon. The later maybe, the former looks worrying.

And yes, the Trump may be bad, but Pence is a total c**t.

Let's try that again

You seem to have an agenda against Obama.

Obama doesn't make silly comments and has been immensely statesmanlike throughout his term.

It is bizarre how negatively the America populace views the Health Care Act. I suspect some of the hatred is whipped up by a media 'encouraged' by the big medical insurers. The US system is massively inefficient yet Obama did wrong, really?

And as for he should have made more change, how exactly when the Republicans lined up against him on every issue and held the balance of power?

I don't particularly care one way or another for any of the senior US political figures, so my opinion is quite balanced and my questions aren't loaded. I don't think Obama is in any way cool, nor do I dislike him. You're obviously an Obama fanboy hence you've got defensive when I've questioned him. I think it still stands though - if Obama had united a country, or at least seen the green shoots of something like that happening, there wouldn't be such an appetite for change from the American people. It's not the only factor at play I know.

Americans need to do some serious soul searching and ask questions of themselves as to what has gone so wrong with the Obama legacy that people have veered so far towards Trump. This isn't a handful of people we are talking about. Why has this happened

I am not defensive, I speak as I find. You made unsubstantiated negative comments about someone I have observed to have done a decent job in a difficult situation. Obama fanboy - stupid comment. On the other hand you are 'balanced' by implying there is no difference between Trump and Obama. Really? Do you ever read/watch the media? You can observe the comments each has made on a daily basis yet you come out with this rubbish.

The lazy arguments all over social media that America has showed itself as racist. Not everyone who voted for trump is a racist, not every one would have voted for reasons of race. There are so many more factors at play and as I say the Clinton era probably has a lot to do with it.

I wouldn't bet against Michelle Obama being a democrat candidate one day

The Brexit Trump double!

Nigel Farage 2 Barack Obama 0.

2016 is one of the most exciting years I have ever experienced (born 1954).

Lots of knee jerk reactions expected today from the usual suspects - but give it time and the world will probably see a better USA in 4 years time than the one Obama will hand over.

Talk of assassination is a bit premature and disingenuous... Trump is only President elect right now.

When he does get into power though it will be interesting to see which of Trump's pre-election promises he achieves first....

Locking Up Hilary?

Building the Wall and getting the Mexicans to pay for it?

Banning Muslims from entering the USA?

i suspect they were tongue-in-cheek, grandstanding boasts as is typical of his on stage persona.

I reckon he will turn out to be a pragmatic achiever and with the Republican majority at all political levels in Washington should get things moving.

His appointment will also be good for us if he keeps his promise to put The UK ahead of EU for trade negotiation once we have formally left the EU.

The dawn of a new era.

Ok, lets put your overt defensiveness to one side so we don't get bogged down in that. I haven't implied anywhere that there is no difference between Trump and Obama. In fact I haven't compared them at all. Anyone can see they're polar opposites. I merely pointed out that the result and feeling from the American people must put Obama's achievements into question, and I still stand by that as a factor in the result.

I do read and watch the media, in fact it's the bread and butter of my job, but I'm also savvy enough to know that not everything in the media is gospel and that they all have their own agendas too. Even our dear old BBC was churning out unsubstantiated BS relating to the US election this morning. Ironically, part of Trump's campaign was calling out the media for being crooked.

The people have spoken, they've made their decision, and whilst it seems like the most stupid of decisions, its their call.

That's the problem with democracy, it isn't flawless and it can produce freakish results, but it is more representative.

It'll at least be more interesting than a Clinton Presidency. Whilst Bush was a f**king disaster, it was at least interesting.

I for one reject our new Tango Mascot.

I watched his acceptance speech this morning and as I say his body language and tone was very different to that of the rallies. He was grandstanding there and saying what the crowd wanted to hear, what got them going and what got him the publicity he wanted. This morning he was quite different. He probably never expected to win if he was honest Half of it won't happen as someone else said the republicans will probably be disappointed and the democrats surprised because by god they will be watching his every move and listening to his every word.

It does make things quite difficult when you are raising children and trying to install values of respect, not speaking ill of others and having a decent moral compass and they see trump becoming undoubtedly one of the most important powerful men in the world after some of the things he has said and done. Quite at odds with what I am trying to instill.

As for it being farage 2 Obama 0 . Quite childish. I used to like farage. Now I see him as someone who is a trouble maker. He thinks it's funny to set the cat amongst the pigeons and upset the apple cart. He has made a career out of it all the while pretending to be a man of the people which when you scratch the surface he most certainly is not. Drinking a pint in your local does not mean you are one of the people. Very cleverly marketed if you like.
