Maybe a £27 striker should be able to do more than head a ball..... that is why Liverpool did not want him!

Yeah he was all of those last season, only 15 PL goals(17 goals in total); what a total waste of £27m. And it only took us until our forth season in the PL before we signed a striker that was worthy of the name so it should be a piece of cake to replace him. Just one question worth considering though; how did he (and arguably the rest of the team) become so sh*t between the end of May and the beginning of August?

CB is a one trick striker he can head the ball but his ground play is almost non existent, we had 12 corners on Saturday and you would expect at least one to be converted. personally if we can sell him and get our money back we should and find a better option!

Thing is - he did have a few headers but they didn't go in...

He's not exactly lazy, but there were plenty of occasions on Saturday when I wanted to see all 6 ft 3 of him committing to challenges and getting stuck into defenders. He's under no pressure for his position so you can see why he might not bother to put himself at risk. As for playing to his strengths... Well, one of our best moments was a Hennessey long ball, flicked on by Benteke to Zaha, who was already running off him anticipating that Benteke would win it.

The style of play isn't suiting Benteke very well, and if he is a £27 million striker, we should surely just build the team around him? He isn't lazy or unfit, it's just he isn't the type of player who can take on defenders with the ball at his feet.

We buy a £27m striker and play a style that creates nothing for him in open play, leaves him isolated and forces him to chase CB's even though he's no comfortable with it and never was (ask Liverpool). We know he's probably the best in the air in the league and we stay narrow and keep it on the ground? wtf?! No, not really. If you factor in he should be being fed from both the others in the front three and from two wingbacks then he should actually be getting a better service than before. Add to that the ability to flick on for others running beyond him and we should be far more effective up front than just relying on wide men hitting teams on the break. Saturday's biggest issue from what I saw was an imbalance with Ward at RWB which meant that HT could simply shut down our left side as there was no real threat from our right (which changed in the second half with RLC dropping back & Andros coming on). This over exposed the back three as well as leaving the front three more than a little isolated. He showed that he will win headers if we get the ball in (only a top class save prevented him scoring) & he did win a few balls deeper for Wilf to run on to. Do you need reminding of the goal he goat against Chelski? Surely that showed he has a great touch & cool head - as do many of his international goals. He's a goal taker rather than maker so give him the chances & he'll convert them.
Will this be five? It's gonna be five! It IS five! |
