Yep, family culture makes a significant difference. Anyone walking into a top set at a normal secondary school and then walking into a bottom set can straight away see the affects of family culture aligned with ability. You do of course get lovely kids in bottom sets and some right unlovely ones in top sets....But family and hence societal culture does make a difference. Success is not just about ability...Though the higher you go obviously the more it does....Nevertheless most 'average' ability kids could attain most top sets in most schools if they really wanted it.....Though not all round in all subjects because by definition being average means the mental effort required does take it out of them. The 'average' ability child who really tries hard and behaves well is....as far as I'm concerned a wonderful thing. They deserve all the praise they get. They are worth two of a talented kid who can't be bothered. Edited by Stirlingsays (25 May 2017 12.56pm)
