France and Germany are pushing plans to offer Britain and other European countries “associate membership” of the EU in a move that could rebuild the UK's ties with the bloc.

A way to restore the customs union for example, or even single market access, without being legally tied to the EU as a full member (no referendum).

If true we should be looking seriously at this.

Sir Keir be bold, for once.

Not so thin end of a wedge, we should have nothing to do with it.

Might make more sense to wait and see what the potential pros, cons and net benefits would be from such an arrangement before making a decision based purely on emotion and ideology... oh wait

Keir Starmer: Labour in power would not ‘want to diverge’ from EU.

I think this is being picked up wrongly he means EU standards for trade, but you never know.

Lib Dems don't believe that Brexit is an General election issue right now.

[Link]

I think Ed Davey is correct. In 2019 his predecessor positioned Lib Dems as the party of Remain and got wiped out.

Of course a significant number of people are unhappy about Brexit but for the politicians the key question is, is it an election issue.

For decades the public have complained in opinion polls about immigration and the abolition of capital punishment, for example. However come the General Election and despite the media neither of these 2 issues have ever figured highly in the thoughts of voters.

I think for now Ed Davey is taking a pragmatic approach, the sky has not fallen in on Brexit and people have other things to worry about. Perhaps at the next GE after this it will be a major topic, but for now I think people are sick of it and are more concerned about the economy an public services.

The Lib Dems have been scoring successes on this and local issues lately.

Also my own feeling is that Green issues will not be a big issue at the next GE either despite what the chattering classes think.

One of the reasons Ireland misses the UK in the EU is that we always acted as a bulwark against this kind of pressure. That corporate taxation scheme/scam in the R.O.I has had Brussels snarling for decades. The Brits effectively acted a bouncer stopping the bigger boys from ganging up on Ireland for all kinds of reasons but now we ain't there..

Suspect that it was only Covid that stopped this happening earlier. Once you get through all the 'St Paddys Day' marketing BS that seems to comprise much of Dublins foreign policy approach, then not the most popular member of the EU, especially on the financial side.

It's what happens when you are a minor member of a mafia-style organisation.
