Finally a story on the news I agree with. The BBC has gone over budget by £27mm on re-building the set for Eastenders. The original cost was £60mm final cost is estimated to be £87mm. WTF its a soap opera, make do with wobbly scenery like Crossroads for gods sake. The story is about the overspend but why spend £60mm in the first place? Well not to worry its not their money and the BBC apparently provides marvelous value for money or so they keep telling us.

Remember this story when the Big Bucks Corporation complains about Tory cuts as the reason for scrapping the free over 75yo license. Nice work if you can get it and trebles all around.

disgusting abuse of tax payers money !...where do I signup for this gravy train. I need some pampering ! I love BBC dramas as that is my thing but that is because of the program makers and actors..not the person who decides to buy/fund it ! This is not a private conpany who can pay what they want to whom they want they need to be accountable to us.

Audiences for soaps are reliable. News is the biggest loss maker. Expensive to produce and limited returns. Last year the BBC's share of TV viewing was 31.6% on revenues of £5bn. ITV's was 21.7% on revenues of £3.1bn.* For each % share point ITV generated revenues of £143m. The BBC produced each % share point for £158m. The BBC spent 10% more per point than ITV which were it a commercial venture could be readily justified by it's market leading position. If the BBC were selling ads in the same way that ITV does then it would command at least a 10% price premium vs ITV per 1,000 viewers reached. *but of course herein lies the difference.
