Planes, hijacked by terrorists, crashing into a tower block and killing thousands is horrific enough in its own right.

I'm not sure that it's a matter of searching for a more comforting version. Rather just what is more probable to have happened.

While it's not impossible for a government to harm or even kill its own people with a wider aim in mind, I don't tend to think that on this scale and how many people would've had to have been involved, it makes it very unlikely.

If we go down this controlled explosion route, why even involve planes in the first place? Just pin explosions on a terror group. The amount of simultaneous aspects that are apparently going on if this is a conspiracy seems both surplus to requirements and improbable that it wouldn't come out at some point.
