I don't see that happening this side of the summer. The club will want to see if Ferguson can be the answer before shelling out on an alternative. It's unfortunate that Omicron has stopped the U23 programme as Ferguson was about to feature. Probably won't get to see him in action for a while now.

Based on reports looks like we are after a striker, assuming that is if Mateta leaves.
I think priority needs to be a centre back, I think in some games we get found out. Anderson has the odd error in him but should be a starter alongside Guehi. For me Tomkins should be back up. I feel we need someone to push Guehi & Anderson. Tosin Adariboyo from Fulham is young and available for around 10m.
In terms of a left back, I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t sign a back up. They did it when Mitchell was coming through, remember when Parish said in an interview they rate Tyrick and don’t want to block his path. I think the left back with the greater potential from the youth teams is Tayo Adaramola. Extremely pacey and good attacking contributor. Reece Hannam at times also has looked solid, especially in the play off games in PL2 last season. At other times they he does not look ready.

As i said weeks ago i would try to offload Benteke, Wilf and luka before they walk for nothing 30m for the lot is better than nothing, Borja Mayoral is a must for me if we can get him, and a DM and LW on loan, and 2/3 youngsters on the bench

Sell Zaha and use the money to strengthen the defence. Free up that space for a real kid as opposed to a big kid to come through and shine.
We no longer need him as talismanic sheen starting to wear off and petulance coming back into his game.

No chance we need to pay over the odds for a CB in Jan. Guehi and Anderson are 1st choice with Tomkins, Kouyate, Riedewald, Kelly all as cover. May as well hold out until summer to get some competition for current partnership.
Probably not worth throwing money at this window unless a bargain presents itself.

I think it might be a good idea to keep tabs on Luke Plange at Derby. The 19 year old's had a proper breakout month in December. Still only just broken into Derby's threadbare squad but if he can maintain this sort of form for the second half of the season I'd look at him for the summer while he's still a relatively unknown quantity.

With the crop of transfers/loans from the summer doing so well I can't see us dipping into the market with urgency this winter. Cannot remember a window where every signing is contributing to this level.

Kelly is not contributing so he may go if we get a younger centre back. Ditto riedewald and luka. 2 midfielders in and they could be gone. And a striker for mateta. Short term cover at left back also. It could be busy enough with a small net spend

Schlupp can cover LB seeing as he's not going to Afcon. He has done it before although he is more PvA than Mitchell. Also, Ferguson has played LB as well as CB, but, would prefer him as cover for Wardy atm.

Operating from a position of strength for once!
Arguments can be made for a CDM, a left back, CB cover and a forward but really the squad looks fine even if AFCON plus COVID could see us very short.
If anything does happen it will in all likelihood be someone we have been monitoring long term and who looks value. That feels good.
It wouldn't wholly surprise if we saw a couple of the young'uns go out on loan. The U23s look safe in the table and there are a few there that might benefit from some hurly burly down a league or so.

As others have said, good to be in a position where there's no urgent need for signings. Anyone coming in will be a bonus to an already good season but always good to plan ahead for areas that need cover in the future. A long term replacement for Ward will need to be on the radar, as well as more depth at LB. It feels like the attacking department is well covered especially if Mateta can kick on from his Norwich display, although cover for Zaha would also be nice.

Agreed, Ferguson 8s excellent cover all across the back line as he can play either fullback role as well as Centre back.

I'm expecting a very quiet window.
Unless a bargain buy is presented to us, I think the rebuild will continue in the summer.
January is usually for those clubs that have a pressing need in one or more positions and I don't think we are in that category right now.

I really doubt there will be any activity this window.
Only possible activity I can see will be if we do agree a deal to release Mateta early from his loan deal and sign a replacement whose contract is close to ending. Eddie Nketiah is a name that keeps coming up.
I think as others have said some cover at LB would be nice assuming Ferguson is on the road to recovery. I'd be happy if we got a young squad player from the lower leagues as cover.

We have a decent squad that would be hard to improve unless we are talking about spending big bucks .
Probably best to save any funds till the summer when PV can begin phase 2 of the squad refurbishment
