The DUP needs the protocol gone. If they don't then they might not win this Summer's election.

Van Leyden had a real mare over vaccines, in fact she acted promptly to overturn the decision made by her deputy, but hey that's politics.

But she must really stay out of Irish politics altogether, the deal was done.

Will the North ditch the Union, C ?

The Downing St declaration means it's up to the people in NI. This generation will need to die before any referendum. Nobody wants Northern Ireland anyway. British and Irish people both claim to love the place, sing songs about the place but it's a black hole for money.

Regardless of what side you're on (I'm on neither). The main thing is peace there.

Mary Lou Mcdonald was on form today, she said the D.U.P wanted brexit, signed up to it, now the real;ity of it has hit they have to take the consequences, true enough, dont get what you shouted for, then try and change it when you have it.

Maybe they should think of a third option, an independent NI. I worked for DuPont in the 1980's and they had a plant in Maydown. A subsidiary was Conoco and I also worked in Aberdeen. At the time there was more nationalism in the North than in NE Scotland.

Great result on the vaccine

But exports down, allegedly, 68%

Chimes with the nightmare retail businesses were kicking off about last month. Not even sure if that’s possible to rectify - resolving it would surely mean rejoining the single market

Retail start ups and SMEs are screwed

Tbh if this number stays after 6 months or so then yes a cause for concern but we are just 6 weeks into brexit. We are rewriting a 40 odd year system.
It will take a little longer. If both sides had agreement earlier then the issues would at least have been visible. 3 days is all the heads up the uk had.

Like the rest of Ireland then.

All the British isles countries live considerably beyond their means.....the English though have much more economic muscle.

There is no reason why EU consumers would buy from the UK now.

That figure is with grace periods which will end soon.

A lot of ifs there

I fail to understand why a contingency could not have been devised in the four years (four) prior in case this scenario arose. It’s not like this is a minority industry with a small economic contribution. On the list of ‘pretty s*** things that could happen’ I’d say it would have been comfortably nestling in their top 10

So 10 different scenarios then. Not easy to plan for really.

Rubbish.

Hard to plan for if you have a month, sure.

4 years? Literally the purpose of their existence, along with agreeing a deal. What makes this worse is this would have been known about as it is part of the deal. So it's not like it's come as a surprise to the government. Perhaps they thought the PR of securing a deal would be a better short term gain than the reality of what was actually agreed.

Wouldn't be the first time short termism has triumphed in politics. And won't be the last
