Lower than Robertson, Cole, Evra, of course, but you named 3 of the very best. Higher than Stuart Pearce, I think he was overrated, seems great cause he scored a lot of penalty kicks at club level. I would also rank him below than Leighton Baines, Ian Harte, Riise, Kolarov, maybe even Danny Rose (who had some great seasons), but he still makes Top 10. So even with his defensive faults, PVA has actually done something in football and should be respected by us. Edited by mattteo (13 Feb 2021 6.58pm)[/quo PVA ranks higher than Stuart Pearce? I'm struggling with that, but I do agree that not only PVA, but all our senior players should be afforded the proper respect to their abilities. Very few human beings are able to hold their ground over the course of a premier league season, a point I make every time someone suggests that we should bin the lot of them and put the youth team in. That said, if PVA were anything other than an average top flight player, I think it would have revealed itself by now. If it walks like a duck etc... Edited by TheBigToePunt (13 Feb 2021 7.15pm) Surely the point is not where PVA fits in the list of great full backs but the fact that currently he isn’t even the best at Palace! Mitchell isn’t world class but he’s better defensively than PVA and with our ageing defence we need full backs who can defend.

That's too harsh on PVA. I'd like him to stay, he has done a lot of great things for Palace and is one of the best left backs IN THE HISTORY OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE, not just of Palace Really? According to the whoscored.com avg ratings, he's performing as the joint 3rd worst left back in the league. Chilwell, Cole, Winterburn, Irwin, Le Saux, Evra, Cresswell, Robertson, Baines, Clichy, Riise, Harte, Shaw, Bridge, Staunton, Rose, Tierney, Mendy, Alonso, Pearce... All of those players are absolutely streets ahead of him. It'd have to be well argued to say PVA is in the best 40 left backs to have played in the Premier League. If so, a lot of it would be based on longevity (similar to Joel Ward), rather than a particularly high level of talent or performance. He's only ever looked par in Palace and Sunderland teams.

And they would swap their entire offensive for Zaha, Eze, Mateta, Ayew and Batshuayi. I prefer it like this. Their back 5 isn't all that great either, the right defender Lowton didn't have another Premier League goal for like 8 years, it just happened to have a good day. I think Clyne edges him at individual quality. And I don't like their left back Pieters at all, he was slow back when he was at Stoke and that was years ago. Yes, their 2 central defenders are better and arguably the goalkeeper too. So that's 3. I wouldn't trade anything for that squad. They have no players for the future. Only NcNeil who is so-so for attack. And of course their central defenders are better than playing with Kouyate and Dann there, but if Tomkins and Cahill were fit... Their normal left back is Charlie Taylor who is better than PVA and Mitchell put together

He has never had injury problems at any other ppint in his career besides this season.

Just something to bear in mind, Burnley recorded their biggest away win EVER in the Premier league today against Palace. This is also the same club that got their first win of the season against us earlier in the season when they were struggling like crazy. When we played them the first time round and lost 1 nil, it was exactly the same back 5 as today, only difference in midfield was macarthur and Townsend in versus milo and Ayew today (Batshuayi also played up top and missed a guilt edged chance to equalise in the first game), so 4 goals conceded and 0 scored with pretty much the same team against them. Lastly in both losses, we've been ahead of Burnley in the league in the table... Let that also sink in too

I am not disputing that he may become a Premier League great in 10 years, when he will be PVA's age, but why put him on that list? Le Saux? You mean that guy who couldn't defend well and by whose fault my national team kicked England's ass in the World Cup and he was ostracized by an entire nation in 1998? You easily forget.

Burnley weren't that good but they didn't have to be. It was like taking candy from a baby.
