When I was a young child - early 1950s - my mother, instead of dragging me around Brixton market, would occasionally ring the changes with a trip to Streatham, Bromley or Croydon - all in those days considerably up-market from Brixton. My favourite was Croydon, mainly because of Kennards department store, which offered pony rides for children. How things have changed for all three of those venues - but none more so than Croydon.

My Mum worked in Kennards. Good old store with a fabulous Soda Bar where they made a fabulous Knickerbocker Glory and jam waffles.

Back in the day Friday nights in the beer Keller. Christ had some bloody good laughs, then staggering home through the whitgift centre.

Yes you have reminded me of the pony rides, weren’t they down the alleyway at the side?

I grew up in West Wickham, which is but a shortish bus ride to Croydon. If the Swap Shop was still there I'd leave my rural idyll and move back to the area like a shot. Edited by Pete53 (02 Mar 2021 3.53pm)
