It’s not unique to Cornwall and it’s a real problem which must be sorted. When we have a housing crisis leaving homes empty as an investment cannot be in our collective best interests.

If people bought and then rent out, as I do, then they are at least providing a service but keeping them deliberately empty is not. It’s a waste of very precious resources. Racism exists everywhere because stupid people can be found everywhere. You were either just unlucky to encounter it or were behaving in a way that wound someone up. The folk here can be pretty cutting with those who behave discourteously, but underneath most have hearts of gold.

If pretty cutting includes telling my friend to go back to where he came from twice while we were waiting to get into a car park and ignoring him when waiting at the bar in three pubs then yes, they are pretty cutting. Extreme right wing behaviour in my book but apparently evidence of hearts of gold.

Here they tend though to be incomers rather than the genuine Cornish. It also depends on how you behave. I would have to have witnessed the entire set of incidents to understand what contributed to the outcome. It has never happened to me and I have lived here for over 10 years. As I said there are unfortunately racists everywhere. If your friend walked into our local pub he would quite possibly get that treatment from one of the regulars, who is himself frozen out by many of us. What happened to your friend could happen anywhere. Why the bar staff ignored him is another matter. It has happened to me sometimes when in a new place which is full of regulars but isn’t usual here.

That is you closing your eyes to the realities in Britain in 2023! I am not either trying to justify anything at all. I am describing what is, not what might have been and being practical and honest about what can be done and not spouting the impractical solutions of an angry man. I heard a piece on Radio 4 this morning from those in the care industry about the likely impact on them of the new restrictions on overseas carers bringing family with them. Most of those interviewed have brought their spouses over, after a few months here to get sorted out, and they too are working as carers. The result has been that care homes are now better staffed which in turn has unblocked hospital beds. The industry representatives are very concerned this will now stop and put consequential pressure on the NHS. This then is a political comfort blanket thrown to people like you which may in time mean you will not get a hospital bed when you need one.
