Two stewards were taken to hospital after crowd trouble broke out at Brighton's home Premier League game against rivals Crystal Palace.

Brighton said Palace supporters who had travelled without tickets tried to force their way into the stadium.

The decision was taken to close turnstiles early and some fans with tickets could not see Tuesday's match.

Seagulls chief executive Paul Barber said the "swift action" had "avoided further, major disorder".

"We hope the two stewards hospitalised in the disorder have not suffered serious injuries," he added.

"A minority came intent on causing disorder, which left several stewards with minor injuries, and one steward from each club hospitalised," a Brighton statement said.

The club added that "a number of Crystal Palace fans" arrived after the 19:45 GMT kick-off and tried to force their way into the ground.

Police and the club then decided to close turnstiles early "in the interest of public safety" - just six minutes into the game - which meant fans with tickets who arrived late could not get in.

"A group of about 150 fans - some with tickets - were then escorted back to Falmer station, and onto Brighton Station, before being placed on a train back to London," the club said.

Barber added: "While some genuine fans were left extremely disappointed and unable to get into the stadium, the correct decisions were made."

Sussex Police said they will be viewing CCTV images to identify troublemakers.

Fans with tickets who were stopped from seeing the game have been asked to contact Crystal Palace's ticket office for a refund.

The police have come out saying it was Brighton's decision to close the turnstiles and not theirs.....

There is no evidence that any of those locked out didn't have tickets, they are trying to make it look as if the majority of them didn't.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

In hindsight, Brighton's decision to restrict the number of Palace fans must be seen as the catalyst. I don't think there have been any of these problems in the other matches we have played at the Amex.

Obviously some went yesterday with storming the gates in mind but with proper stewarding and policing, this should have been prevented.

The HF and getting lots of stick for this but there is no proof other than the culprits wearing black which is not that unusual at a football match. I suspect that most of the HF had enough points to obtain tickets themselves and wouldn't have needed to storm in.

Regarding the HF, i'm not sure if it was them but the little scroats were wearing the HF branded clothing (i know that means very little) at the end of the game in the concourse it was these lads setting off a couple of bangers, saw a few lit cigarettes being lobbed about and squaring up to other fans. Tbh they probably got lucky, if they had started on anyone they probably would have had there arses handed to them!

Disappointing end to a good day out!

The HF were given 130 or 150 tickets which is more than their numbers so not them.

A total lie. We were held at Brighton station from 6.50pm by the police. We got to the ground around 7.25pm. The turnstiles were already closed then.

"A group of about 150 fans - some with tickets - were then escorted back to Falmer station, and onto Brighton Station, before being placed on a train back to London," the club said.

Another lie. 300+. All of whom had tickets. The police at the scene said this was not their choice but that of BHA and felt it was wrong. We were held until 9.20 when we were herded onto a train to Brighton.

There those of us with cars and hotels were refused exit by more police and told to get on the football special and then get a train back.

The whole thing was a farce handled by incompetent stewards and police from start to finish.

I was there at the 1979 Boxing Day horror, when we were treated like sh*t by the police and stewards alike, plus Palace lost 0-3.
Looks like nothing has changed, except we got a point this time.

Having gone last night I'm still mystified as to how these people allegedly gained entry as we all had to show iD with our tickets as well as getting searched and have sniffer dogs!!!

Regardless of the mindless t***s turning up without tickets in the first place HOW THE f*** DID THEY GET IN? BHA's security was clearly just for show and about as effective as a chocolate teapot!

Now they've been able to do this at one venue...they'll bound to try it again!

This to me is an utter failure on the part of the police & Brighton stewards.

There was enough money invested in security, stewards & police to manage 2000 fans, they f***ed up.

Some fans are bellends but they can only bellend if managed poorly.

When I left, I was told by an Officer that 30! had got in via a door left open by a BHA Steward/Staff member...seems if this were to be true that BHA panicked big time unable to handle the pressure and made a knee jerk reaction adding a Zero to the likely figure in order to try and justify the subsequent actions.
