It wasn't just Gayle.

Odion Ighalo- bought by Watford for 8 million, sold for 23,5

Matej Vydra- bought for 8,4 and sold for 12 after promoting the team to the Premier League

Berahino- team product, sold for 14 million

Gayle- bought for 5,3 and sold for 12 after many goals and assists in little playing time

*Sterling- what's more to say about him? Team product, sold for 62,5 million*

Brown Ideye- bought for 5,4, sold for 12 million

Benteke- bought from Genk for 9 million by Aston Villa, sold to Liverpool for 46,5

Lewis Grabban- bought by Norwich for 3,7 million, sold for 9,3

Lukaku- bought for 15 million, sold for 35,5

Shane Long- bought by Hull for 8,5, sold for 15

Luis Suarez- bought for 26,5, sold for 81,7

Danny Welbeck- club product, did very well as long as he played there, still brought in a profit of 20 million

Chicharito- bought from Mexico for 7 million, sold for 15 and they could have/ should have gotten more for him

Loic Remy- bought by QPR for 10,5 and sold for 16

Sadio Mane- bought for 15, sold for 41, 5

Wilfried Bony- bought for 16, sold for 32,3

All of those above were under 27 at the time they were bought, most actually under 23.
Enlisting a 34 year old player has to be done very carefully, taking his overall impact into account.

Didn't Liverpool "steal" him from QPR?

Ha-ha!!!! Yeah, right ))) Man, come on!

That's why there's only been 1 other like him in Celtic's history, because everyone could do it, right?

Scottish football is on its arse, Hooper would do well in the championship. That's his and Celtics level.

Defoe demands 100k a week and a 6m signing on fee- personally think there better options available. Someone like braithwaite could can occupy striker or wide positions.

Don't want this. When it comes to short, pacey strikers with a lethal finish, Defoe is the past. Gayley is the future. Had him. Lost him. No point trying to replace him with the same sort of striker...only older.

Jermain Defoe has scored 15 Premier League goals in both the last 2 seasons. For Sunderland.

Getting him on a free (wages and signing on fee not-withstanding) would be great business. Benteke, Wickham and Defoe. Not a bad forward line.

Gayle was not that pacey. In fact I remember him being quite slow against most defenders.

Sharp in 6 yard box and decent finisher yes.

But those wages are likely to be astronomical. For a striker who's going to come on for the last 10 minutes of each game....as he doesn't fit our system. Doesn't seem worth it.

Defoe is not for Palace at £5m + per year, three year contract plus transfer/signing on fee plus agents this would be north of £22m investment . Good as he is there is no value in this for a player who will mainly start on the bench.

We need a centre back (Sakho please), a Keeper (press rumours linking us to Hart), competition at RB and a creative central midfielder - it seems unlikely we can afford our first pick in all those positions. I'd rather prioritise spending on positions where the new player will start every game. We do need another striker but, good as Defoe is, he'd only be a sub most games, I think we should look elsewhere.
