On BBC London news tonight Mark Bright claimed to have been a Millwall player, to be fair to him though he clarified later by saying that he was only there for a month.

It always amazes me when Ian Wright claims to have been a Scumwall supporter. He did sort of come that from that part of the world but I can't imagine that he ever really supported them physically. Bearing in mind his sensitivity on race issues, very often fully justified, he and Mark Bright would have been fully aware of the dreadful abuse, much of it racist, that was heaped upon them, in their hayday, by The Den faithful. I have actually been amongst them, as were the police incidentally, when it was at its worst.

The first football hooliganism I ever experienced was a Palace v Millwall match in the mid 60s. I recall several fights breaking out, particularly at the Whitehorse End.

But, back to the original subject .. I too was at the 4-2 match. I seem to recall one of Woodruff's goals at the Holmesdale End being one where he chipped the ball over the oncoming keeper and the ball then bounced a couple of times before finally going in - at one point it looked as if it would clear the crossbar. I was also at the 2-0 win at the Den earlier in the season.

On the subject of Bobby Woodruff, I saw his debut at the beginning of the (I think) 1966-67 season and I remember very clearly the gasp that went up from the crowd when he delivered his first long throw-in. Such a skill is now fairly common-place but then it was pretty well unique to Bobby Woodruff.

First memory for me was the 70's too. Probbaly the same game, Sash. F Troop had made an appearance on the Holmesdale terrace wearing - and does anyone else remember this? - surgical headgear. It was their uniform at the time. Very strange.

I too was at that 1-1 at the Den '88 Canon goal, but I was in their end (I married into a Millwall family) and I celebrated...... quietly to myself of course, untill I heard from behind "I can smell a Palace fan" thankfully my wife's brothers looked after me and I was saved. Their fans have always been up for it camaraderie takes over.
