Not sure if it's still available, there is a superb book by Chris Groom entitled ROCKIN' AND AROUND CROYDON.
It gives listings of all the rock, folk, blues and jazz shows in & around the Croydon area between 1960 - 1980.
Plus great articles/interviews with local heroes, photos and leaflets reproduced for the likes of Greyhound, Fairfield, Olive Tree, Star, Orchid, ABC Savoy, Top Rank, Red Deer, Cartoon, Wallington Public Hall, etc.
It's in front of me now and I could bore you all with some of my stories as well as those in the book, but I won't!

Saw that book for sale in a charity shop last week but hadn't the money to buy it. I am going back there tomorrow to see if it is still there

Saw Gen X supported by the Cure.
If my drunken memory serves me well, some punk bird got on the stage and pulled a lump of Billy Idols hair out and he left the stage refusing to come back on.
Then went to see the Banshees and the stage pretty well collapsed. Gig cancelled.
Brilliant place,loved it.
Is the Cartoon still going????????????
If its still useable it would be a great place for a palace themed pub run by the club.

I'm afraid The Cartoon is long gone, along with most of that area Used to love that place, and getting turfed out by Stewart using a table on it's side like a bloody bulldozer

Never managed to go ( too young ) but was a favourite haunt of legendary local punk band The Damned ( The Doomed in the poster you uploaded is The Damned with Lemmy from Motorhead on bass ).
I mainly went to the Croydon Underground where I saw Dr and the Medics, Fields of the Nephlim, The Fall, Peter and Test Tube Babies etc
My brothers band played at the Cartoon ( Hendrix played here too )and The Gun but did not really go anywhere else much.

What a fantastic thread. I had greatness on my doorstep and never knew it. Would have loved to have seen The Jam back in the early 80's when they were raw, angry and......together.

I know the venues and can almost get nostalgic with you guys without even had been there.

When i see him, it's gonna be painful. Skinny little cont.

Fvck - was born 5 years too late. Shakin' Stevens at Scamps and Wham! at The Green Dragon were the famous names in '82 as a teenager going out in Croydon for the first time.

Underground was cool though. Saved the day.

Remember staring at Paul Cook all night, starstruck. He was with The Chiefs of Relief then. About 1986.
