I will never forget when Palace played away at Orient in the second last game of the 1979 season.Thousands of our fans went mental when Dave Swindlehurst headed the only goal of the game which set us up for promotion on the friday v Burnley. And guess who I saw through a tangled mass of celebrating Palace pick the ball out of the net with a big smile on his face-yes old Stonewall himself!Happy days indeed......

Jacko without doubt was Palace's best ever keeper. Kept us up on his own. Should have played for England. Unfortunately had Banks in front of him. I think his only honour was representing the Football League team once.

Yes, you're right, his only senior honour was for the Football League XI.

However, I have this pic of Jacko in goal for England Juniors against Spain, in Lisbon, in the Stanley Rous Cup, March 1961. He was 18 at the time.

In fact, his birthday was 5th Sept 1942 - so in 3 days time, it's a happy 70th to the great man.

And yes, he's our best ever keeper, despite some great challenges later on. And before - Bill Glazier, for instance.

Great photo - these days they'd be wearing gloves twice the size of their hands!

And looks like he kept a clean sheet

The best and most consistent Palace keeper that I've seen since I started supporting Palace in 1964.

As many others have said previously, we have had some excellent keepers over the years but Jacko did not have a weakness in his game and his command of the 6 yard box was immense.

Happy 70th birthday Jacko.

A stockbroker urged me to buy a stock that would triple its value every year. I told him, at my age, I don't even buy green bananas!

He left long before 1979 - more like 1975 I think.

Jacko left for Orient during our relegation season of 73/74.
My favourite Palace keeper. His penalty save from Francis Lee when we beat Man City 1-0 early in 72/73 was fantastic.
Happy 70th Jacko!

He ended up as Goal keeping coach at Ipswich and I remember a match report that said all of Ipswich's keepers were injured and Jacko had to play against Man Utd. Can't remember the score but the paper described him as an 'agile mind telling an ageing body what to do'

That's what I love about football. This man is a real hero to many of us, each with our own memories of him - yet he was playing 40 years ago. I was gutted when Bill Glazier left, but not for too long.

Happy birthday Jacko and I hope you are well where ever you are.

Happy Birthday Jacko Star Keeper!!!

Hard to believe that it's 40 years or so that he left in 1973, as stated already, we've been blessed with good GK's, Roy Bailey was the first I saw and then Vice Rouse followed by Bill Glazier, were our best up to then.

Being a member of the 69 promotion team and I narrowly missed out on grabbing one of his socks when he threw them onto the pitch, in celebration, another guy beat me to it, after that momentous victory over Fulham.

I recall meeting up with Bill Glazier for a drink when he came back down from Coventry, along with George Curtis their captain, after shortly breaking his leg when he moved up there.

Bill was full full of praise for Jacko but said that Ronnie Allen was constantly telling Dick Graham, our Manager and former GK, that Jacko was the best of the two, think it slightly miffed Bill.

But 10 years as our No 1 keeper, during 62 to 73, in exciting times, puts him top of my list.

........................Then along came Johnny Byrne! and the rest, as they say, is history.....................
