Can anyone shed any light on the tragedy of Billy Callender, a Palace star of yesteryear?

The book about him suggests that it was brought about by his grief at the death (from polio) of his girlfriend. But is that the whole story?

Did he have a bust-up with the club that was subsequently covered up?

Why was there no mention of him - let alone a tribute - in the club programme in the match after his death?

Palace's manager at the time was John Tresarden (who played for West Ham in the famous "white horse" Cup Final at Wembley.

What, if anything, did he know about the events leading up to the fateful incident?

It seems odd that none of the players gave evidence at the inquest, even though some of them must have been with Callender in his last moments.

He apparently was a top rated keeper and used to spend a lot of his free time in Thornton Heath rec.

All I can do is suggest that a different view and attitude existed towards suicide in those days and may explain why reference was not made to his death.

This is his grave in the cemetery at Prudhoe.

There is no reference on the headstone to indicate that he had been a professional footballer who had given illustrious service to Crystal Palace FC for many years.

There is no material about him in Prudhoe Library. The staff there had never heard of him.

Must have been the Main Stand. It was the only stand until 1969.
