Pulis sees himself as one who buys at £X and sells at £X times 3. Getting Rhodes at the top of his price would not fulfill that criteria. Also, he has said point blank he is out of our price range. If he then buys him, who will believe him in the future? He doesn't strike me as the type who would be willing to sacrifice his credibility. If there were no bidders next month and Blackburn dropped his price for us, then maybe Pulis would have the chance to reconsider and save face. However, that is unlikely to happen. I suspect there is a mighty tussle for his signature going on as I write this.

PS Rhodes remains on my wish list along with Zaha, Cresswell and Dann.

Why would Pulis lose face? If you ask me saying "we cant afford him" is a great way of deflecting the question from a reporter, maybe hes just keeping his cards to his chest ?

I'm not saying he's doing this but are you serious about managers not bull shytting the press about potential targets? Who gives a fuk if he's having them on as long as he has our best interests at heart?

We said we weren't in for Murray didn't we?

I really believe we should....and spend ten million or whatever it takes to get Jordan Rhodes.

The player certainly appears to have the ability to play at this level and would have a good re-sale value should the worst happen.

He would, in my opinion, be a far better investment both in terms of recouping our outlay if necessary and, more importantly, as a genuine goal scorer much better than many of the other strikers we have been linked with.

I am not advocating a spend, spend, spend philosophy rather suggesting a worthwhile purchase. Better to spend ten million with a good return expected (in terms of both goals and re-sale) than, say, three million on a player who will not score as regularly and be worth nothing in a year or so's time.

Much prefer Alfred Finnbogason from the Dutch League for £6 million. Over a goal a game this season as well as 20 plus goals last as well (41 goals in 48 games). Save the £4 million plus for another striker.

He may see himself like that but I am not sure many other do. I don't know how is record stacks against other Managers but if you look at some of the more high profile signings he hasn't turned a profit

Pennant bought for £1.75mill released

Crouch bought for £10mill - may get just over half backif lucky

Jerome bought for £4Mill - now out on loan

Beattie bought for 3.5mill sold for £1.5mill

Tom Soares....................

Apparrently he made a profit on Leon Cort of £220k so not all bad.

Think the striker I'd gamble on is the fella who outscored Rhodes in the Championship last season - namely Glenn Murray.

Pretty sure he'd cost a lot less too.

Do you really think that after Murray's long injury he's going to return & start banging the goals in? I don't. If he doesn't return until February i can't see him being anymore than a sub coming on with 15-20 mins to go. The last thing we want to do is rush him back & he get's injured again.
We need to sign someone who's going to get us goals now.

I tend to agree. I think this chap could keep us up. I think it's worth an £8m bid. As you say, it's an investment.

We also need a goal scoring midfielder. Him and Ledley and we'd be looking good IMO.

Blackburn bought him for about this amount. We would have to bid far higher and I see an all mighty scrap for his signature with other teams at the bottom end of the EPL. Have to be careful that we don't end up chasing rainbows like the summer, leaving our business last gasp which may well happen with Rhodes and then clutching at straws at the death when the deal falls through.

Rubbish for two reasons.
1. Everyone laughed at Blackburn for paying that kind of money for a league 1 (at the time) player. He was way way over priced at £8m
2. Blackburn have tried hard to hide the fact but they are in desperate financial trouble and losing approx £1m a month. At the moment Venkys are propping the club up financially but cannot continue this for long and they know it. They need the money, big time.
This is why it is unlikely Blackburn will get back what they paid for him. They've tried to play the reluctant vendor but everyone (that's interested) knows its a buyers market.
It's only an educated guess but I believe £5m with add ons will clinch him. Problem is there are other clubs that are interested which won't drive the price up by much but decreases our chances of signing him when you consider the wages we can offer.
