Given the ethnic mix of Croydon, South Norwood and South London in general, should there be more black and Asian Palace fans?

Yes, I am an agent of Satan but my duties are largely ceremonial

Yes.

The fact we're not probably means we've failed to appeal to these communities. Hasn't this been touched upon for years?

If there is such thing as a 'typical' Palace fan, ironically I think they live away from the area, whilst many of those who are local support other teams. Do we represent a working class club?

Don't ask me though, I live f***ing miles away.

How would you feel if the club handed ticket discount to people who live locally? Hard done by or a good way of generating more support?

Not for ST, but for matchday tickets only, for example.

I'm no marketer, but I think for a business to thrive there has to be more to a promotion than just money off. Somehow it needs to generate some sort of cultural appeal, and in this case, definitely a sense of community.

Additionally, the 'punter' has to have a likelihood to recommend the experience to someone else, who in turn comes along. We can't resort to diluting our ARPU, especially if this generates a perception that 'new' fans get a better deal than those who stuck by through all the administrations. There has to be a brand value that is representative through something other than price.

As to how you do this, I've no idea. People have to want to come! I think if anyone knows this stuff, surely it's Steve Parish.

The only discount I would actively promote on a big scale refers to kids, as this is a case of 'buying' a new generation who will eventually mature into a fully-fledged season ticket holder for the next 50 years!

Growing up in south norwood in the late 70s-early 80s,which by then already had a large black community as did thornton heath.
Most of the black kids I grew up with liked and played football, but did't ever really attend football matches.
I know more black people go to football now than back then, but not in great numbers.
And I suppose if they do go to games ,there are a lot more attractive teams in London to follow than palace.
The first time I remember seeing large groups of young black people at games was at spurs and arsenal in the mid 80s but not at palace.

There are black and Asian fans. But a majority of the black Asian community are either Man UTD or Arsenal fans. They don't really seem to be interested in football as such but will support who is the best side at the time.

Without wanting to ruffle anyone's feathers, a lot of Asians often seem to be gloryhunting types who will 'support' the flavour of the month on TV or down the pub. Couldn't care less about attracting that sort, and it has bollocks all to do with ethnicity.

Block B comment of 2011/2012 Season:

"That's better Palace, better...but still fucking shit!"

There are more attractive teams for everyone to support, so why do a disproportionate amount of black people support (eg) Arsenal over Palace? If our assumptions are true, there's some sort of cultural reason. Why are we less appealing?

Your right there, and I think that's always been the case.
I think its got a lot to do with family.
Most white working class familys I know have always followed there local team and attended games going back years.
I would think most people started going to football with there dad or another family member.

Lets not start all this pandering bollocks LOL. We are less appealing because football is less important to the black community then the white community. Black people up and down the country support Arsenal, City, UTD and Liverpool, passionate black football fans support local teams.

I would say Liverpool and man utd have the largest Asian support more than any other team ive seen.
Now in liverpools case that's got nothing to do with community as there is no Asian community in Liverpool.
They come from all over the country to watch them.

I think that if we were to stay in the prem for a few years, we would attract more fans of all races. I live in Somerset, nearest club Yeovil Town. Nearly everyone watches the YT results and wears the colours on a match day, but if you ask them who the support, they will invariably mention a prem club. This is because they were non league a few years ago. I believe their gate has increased since promotion to the Championship, and is likely to drop again when relegated. I imagine this is quite normal, as our gates fluctuate. I don't think we look that attractive to young fans who like to win things. Nothing to do with culture.
