And our away support was about 500 at most.

I only missed 2 away games that season and we were lucky if there was 100 of us there for some of the games of any sort of distance, i know this because we would be thinly spread on some big old terraces and as the performances were pretty grim back then it gave us something to do counting!! It wasted all of 5 minutes

Your right come to think of it.
500 back then was a good turn out.
I remember going to Wrexham that season and it was the first time we had won away for 18 months, steve Lovell scored, and there was only about 150 of us on a terrace that held about 3000.

I was there, that turned into a great day, as you say we hadn't won away for so long, we were both in the bottom 3 i think, it was cold, foggy, a poxy long journey, we were caged in with fences all around us and it was a s***e game, but when Lovell popped up with the winner we all went mental, we'd lost a few away games 1-0 up to then and to finally win one was a great feeling.

It was a good day that.
I remember coming out the station and we all started singing england! england! england!
That was the first time id ever gone on the special aswell.

We were obviously on the same train then, it did turn out to be a great day, amazing what a win can do!! To be fair though, I enjoyed those early 80's years, despite the crap team, the lack of numbers and the bleak northern grounds it was good times, because we were young and keen and all that mattered was following team.

The amount of games we lost 1-0 away that season was unreal though, Sheffield Wed, QPR, Norwich,Luton, Shrewsbury, Bolton, derby, Chelsea, just off the top of my head, might be a couple more!!

Did you go Oldham that year?
f*** me that was a bleak day. Middle of November, freezing cold, pissing down with rain and about 100 of us on that massive wind swept end all for a proxy 0-0 draw.

no it was one of the two I missed, we had train tickets but missed it at Euston and as it was a special and we didn't have much spare money we couldn't get an ordinary train. your description seems to be my memory of most away games back then lol

Did you do Barnsley just before xmas? another defeat, knee deep in snow and because of the snow they shut the away end and because there was only about 50 of us they chucked us in a home enclosure with their fans, as it happens they were a friendly bunch, but it could've been a bit dodgy.

my 1-0 stats are a bit wrong, I've looked it up as you got me thinking about that season, the derby and Bolton games I'm thinking of were a season or 2 after and Chelsea we actually won!! the seasons all merge in together now, it was so long ago.

That night game at chelsea brings back memorys.
Zico murphys free kick.
They werent to happy about it if i remember.
Very nasty walking back to fulham broadway that night.
They were a worse team than us back then and thats saying something.

That was the game we ended up in the shed, it was all kicking off outside the away end as we turned up and as the game was just about to start we doubled back and dived in there, it was horrible though, being in the shed and trying to keep our mouths shut as we were winning was a nightmare. Sadly I don't remember our goals or the game, like you said,it was a bit nasty and I think I was just concentrating on staying alive :-)

I remember getting quizzed on the tube back to Victoria after the game.
There was only 3 of us all about 15, all dressed in our Kickers, Adidas Windsheeters and diamond Pringles.
I honestly think that was the only reason we got away with saying we was Chelsea, because there weren't many palace fans that dressed like that back then.
Mind you,me being mixed race thay wern't sure, Chelsea being the Nazis they were at the time.
This was the same season they abused there own Paul canoville at selhurst a month later.

Haha I'm pretty sure I would've been wearing my sky blue Pringles with 2 white hoops round the middle or my white one with red hoops, I loved them tops :-)
We stood away from the main pack in the shed away to the side where it was quite empty, I think there was 4 of us standing there looking a bit sheepish and we must have looked a bit of obvious because a fella came and stood In front of us and shouted 'eagles' as he was looking at us, I thought this is it, we're gonna die!! But thankfully no-one took any notice and he walked off.

How about QPR in the cup(another 1-0 loss) there's been a lot of threads about it on here, we went from taking less than 100 for some away games to taking thousands to loftus road, so the fans were still around.

Your right there monkey ,i think a lot of the old fans that deserted us came back for that game.
Ive never seen us have a mob as big as that before or since if I honest.

Did you go orient in the replay the round before QPR? When West Ham were waiting at stratford for us after the game.

One of the more memorable home games that season was the 3-3 draw against Luton who won the league that year. Think it was televised too but have never seen footage of it since.

Nice one, really enjoyed that.
Looks like we had a decent crowd as well for that game.
Two lovely Adidas kits as well.

So many on here writing about the big disparancies in attendances from week to another. The truth is, I believe, the figures were made up to fool the VAT man. 18,000 one week then 6,ooo the next, even though there seemed as many. Where did the papers get the figures from? Of course once people were convinced attendances were dropping, then some did stay away. Nothing worse than going into an empty pub, for instance.

You might be right there, the club did have a lot of money problems in the early 80s.

The attendance misinformation seems to have affected many other clubs.

Those days they just kept packing them in, we lost, but the atmosphere was incredible and great memory of that season despite what clive allen did to us!!!

I did go to orient, but we didn't get caught up in anything, I think a mate's brother drove to that one!!

I went to the league game at orient as well the following sunday. It was a real come down, it was 0-0 and I think after the high of beating them in the cup, getting into the quarter finals and then having to play a run of the mill league game at 11.30 ko I think it was, on a sunday morning seemed really strange, because there was hardly any sunday football back then and it was s***e.

I think a lot of clubs did it, it was so obvious sometimes that the crowd was bigger than the official total.
But there WAS an unbelievable drop in palace's attendances from our promotion year and the next year when we finished 13th in the 1st division. It started the season after those two seasons when Kenny Sansom left in the summer, I think a lot of fans could sense that Kenny leaving was the beginning of the end of the team of the 80's and that little spell of success, and they were right.

After that quarter final, we went on a bad run and we just about stayed up.
If memory serves right I think we beat Wrexham at home on a Tuesday night second last game of the season to beat the drop.
Would love to know the crowd that night.
Before we lost to Newcastle at home 2-0 in the last game.

Forgot about the sunday game with orient, did we take a lot of there for that?
