I'll never stop finding it amusingly ironic that the poster known as Hrolf The Ganger, that hater of all things multicultural and one so terribly put out by the "waves of immigrants" he perceives, and so terrified of being "swamped" by foreigners, takes his name from a Viking invader who conquered foreign lands and imposed his culture on them at the point of a sword.

The historian Adhemar recorded that on nearing his death Rollo [Hrolf] had a hundred Christian prisoners beheaded in front of himself to appease and honour the old gods

Thank you for posting a vivid example illustrating one of the ills of our society much better than I could have.

Let's not evolve to a more civilised point where we reject and condemn (not hang, draw and quarter)casual racism in everyday speech Funny how so many of those who say "what's all the fuss about/why are they so over sensitive " aren't the recipients of the remarks.

Why don't all these do-gooders stop letting political correctness run wild and concentrate more on going to a Chink restaurant for a good old dim sum and get in a few good "slitty eye" jokes for good effect?.The Chinese like it really, everyone knows that.

Let's get Moody back asap, try and replace Warnock replaced with Malky and applaud Dave Whelan for his comments in a 2011 radio interview that it was "out of order" for black players to complain about being racially abused during matches. For God's sake, why don't those players stop making such a mountain out of a molehill, quit bloody moaning, get a sense of proportion and focus on real issues like complaining about immigrants.

And while we're at it, let's set an example against these silly sensitive people by all making a positive effort to use the N word whenever possible, particularly in the presence of black people. After all, what's so bad about racist abuse or stereotypes?

Viva your common sense and proportionality! let's stop this silly nonsense and focus on real issues, and which casual racism from people with a public profile absolutely isn't. Think about it.

It's a shame that we can't discuss issues like this sensibly without either going completely OTT as you've done or insulting other forum members as one particular individual has done.

I'm interested to know why we are all up in arms because someone thought it acceptable to call Chinese people chinkies yet this forum is absolutely choc a block with insults of every description regarding gay people and if you don't believe me just post anything with reference to Brighton and see what the results are

I have gone slightly OTT on this one granted , but I don't regret a word I've written and if I did insult someone, well racism is an emotive issue and what they wrote about Whelan and Malky's remarks appalled me.You make an absolutely valid point about the gay jibes on here (and the lack of jumping on them) though two wrongs don't make a right.

To me, if someone with a high public profile makes racist (and yes they were racist and anti-Semitic, no possible doubt about it in my opinion) comments to a national newspaper followed by an apology which actually isn't an apology at all along with that hoary old anti-Semitic chestnut that loads of his friends are Jewish, it makes me want to puke, maybe all the more so as a member of a group on the other end of it. If others disagree that its racist and anti-semitic or think such casual racism is no big deal, that's for them ultimately.

I accept your post as a very reasonable counter argument. I would agree that casual racism in public is distasteful and insulting if personal.
Britain has come a long way in discouraging racial stereotypes and prejudice. Unfortunately, what was once an effort by the fair minded to improve society has now become a crusade by certain political entities that is constantly hijacked for self interest.
Remember, most people in this country never asked for a multi cultural society and many are not happy to now be living in a country which year on year is swamped by wave after wave of immigrants. Tolerance is something that the British do better than most and if some people step out of line occasionally then it must be put into perspective. Let's have a discussion about all the facets of imported foreign cultures that offend many Britons every day.

What you might want to think about is Whelan's distinction several times in his remarks between "English" people and "Jews" and "English" people and "Chinese" people. The logical conclusion being that Jews living here aren't English, nor people of Chinese origin nor maybe to him, Black people or Asian people.

My family, along with most other Jewish people here, came here over a hundred years ago, but we're still not "English" in the eyes of people like Whelan. At what point exactly are they/we allowed not to be distinguished so fundamentally on grounds of religion or race? There has been a Chinese community since at least the 19th century.

That's why Whelan's remarks go to the heart of something very important about how we regard immigrants and a multi cultural society. The same remarks about being "swamped" etc that are made today about immigrants now are exactly those made about Jewish immigration a hundred plus years ago. It can be seen now that the arguments about that immigration signalling "swamping" and the end of the world here, were a complete load of tosh. Just like, for example, the arguments about immigrants from the West Indies 40-60 years ago. Blaming our woes largely on immigration has been for a long time and continues to be a great way of distracting attention away from the real causes of why people feel disadvantaged.

Actually, arguably the main "foreign" influence changing this country since 1942 has been American, economically, politically and culturally, and involving next to no immigration.

I agree with a lot of what you say. however we are all naturally biased in our opinions.
There have always been migrants but not in the huge numbers we see today. Only 45% of Londoners now consider themselves "white British". This effects the cultural landscape and more significantly, the politics of this country.
As for blaming "foreigners for all our ills.
There is no doubt that there has always been a tenancy to do so and some of this can be put down to
ignorance and unfamiliarity but.... Asian gangs molesting young white girls in multiple towns, religious extremists plotting and sometimes succeeding in killing Britons on home soil, a massive rise in street crime from the 80's onward, the fact that it is reported that 80% of crime is committed by non whites, slavery, witchcraft, honour killings, forced marriages..... I could go on.
These are not imaginary, they are real. and they have all been delivered to our doorstep by immigrants.
I only make this point to illustrate how it is easy to spout clichés about racism and bigotry but frankly, there is no smoke without fire.
Even back some years , the Jewish areas of London were know for having very high crime rates.
No, people don't fear the foreigner because of some ignorant preconception, they see with their own eyes the various downsides of multi culture and they don't like it. Does this make them racists ? No, it displays self interest for themselves, their families and their country. Self interest is something shared by all nations and creeds. They look after their own first.
Tt is is the natural order of things, and no amount of liberal brainwashing will change that. The rise of UKIP is clear evidence that many people are very unhappy with the way thinks are going and with the people that have made it happen.

Dear TUX, Don't you realise there is such a thing as a stereotypical racist comment?!

A stereotype per se is not necessarily racist.

A stereotype based on supposed characteristics distinguished by race can be racist

A stereotype based on supposed characteristics distinguished by being Jewish can be anti-semitic.

When I said I wasn't going to engage with you about garbage like the substance of your/Malky's and Whelan's views,I'm not. As I said earlier, in my opinion, trash doesn't need dignifying and shouldn't be dignified by me in that way.

You are right, though. I should keep from replying to you at all (hadn't yet loggged off from my last post!).Others have put the point. Sorry and full apologies for replying

Good argument, and a valid discursive observation, the separation of the idea of a nationality from 'minority' ethnicities, is itself a structuralized form of racism, in that it is supportive of the idea (Nationalism) of a positive ideal whilst singling out negatives and distancing them from that idea (in this case race, religion etc) by association with a negative.

This reminds me of Wetherall and Potter's classic discursive study of immigration and racism in New Zealand (198. Language is not a neutral means of communication after all, but a means of positioning.

It amuses me no end that the same board right wingers who were so astoundingly offended by Emily Thornberry's lazy classist remarks last week find Dave Whelan's lazy racist remarks this week so palatable. At least those of us on the left are not hypocrites, and criticise all 'isms not matter the source. Right-wingers, as usual, are not equal opportunity observers.
