By process of elimination are you saying Les Dennis wasn't much cop? Bit harsh, if Dennis didn't have Family Fortunes he'd be nothing.

Never found him funny tbh, asde from his guest appearance in Extras which was sublime. The only other thing of note concerning him was Neil Morrisey banging his missus.

3-2-1 Was excellent, lots of relatively straight forward and easy rounds, and then the big last challenge always seemed to be a riddle on a par with being able to demonstrate key mathematical concepts that support String Theory.

It might be a case that I was a kid, and s**t at riddles, but those final rounds seemed harder than a statue of a bareknuckle boxing champion.

ive never watched either of them but am I right in saying on family fortunes once , the question was " name a dangerous race " and someone said " the arabs !"

And by no means not the worst answer ever given either. Family Fortunes was an argument for Eugenics.

That's because he was 'the straight man' to Dustin Gee, and about as funny as Hale and Pace banging your mothers corpse. However, Family Fortunes was perfect. An unfunny, failed comedian and washed up impressionist, hosting a quiz that somehow managed to have people failing to answer questions, that required no real knowledge to answer. It said everything you ever needed to know about the 'human experiement'

Perfect nihilism.

PTJ is right, occasionally you'd get a smart family on it, and it wouldn't work the same. But you needed that to realise just how easy it was to beat the other team (i.e. win the first round by saying the most obvious thing, and then pass).

Pee Wee Hermann once did a quiz show in America based on the ignorance of the contestants called 'You don't know jack'. And Alexi Sayle once did a nice gag on his show, he was walking up a staircase in some stately home expounding on great comics, as he walked up the stairs behind him were portraits of Laurel and Hardy, Chaplin, Turpin, Bob Hope, Hancock etc till he stood at the top of the stairs to make his point while behind him was a portrait of the great man himself: Les Dennis.

Yeah and they once asked "name something green" and the woman said "my cardigan".

The show's no fun when the contestants have a brain but the same goes for most stuff on the telly.

Was her cardie actually green and if so did she rightly argue the point? A letter to the Times and to Terry Wogan on Points of View would be appropriate I feel if she was denied justice.

Haha, that would've been fantastic viewing if it was teal and everyone argued with teal was a shade of green or blue.

PTJ is right, occasionally you'd get a smart family on it, and it wouldn't work the same. But you needed that to realise just how easy it was to beat the other team (i.e. win the first round by saying the most obvious thing, and then pass).

The obvious quirk for me, that gave it appeal, was that you were essentially having to pre-empt what the public would say and predicting whether they were as f**king stupid as your retarded cousin you'd brought on the show with you. Yes, lots of people will say "Jaguar, Porsche or Ferrari" to the question "Name an expensive make of car" but there could always be a couple of wally brains in the panel of people they surveyed that arrived in a Fiat Panda and thought the £500 they paid for it was quite a bit.

And therefore it was a perfect setup for laughing at dullards that had missed this salient fact and didn't answer the question as though they had realised a panel of people had been surveyed at all.

Plus I love that impression of Mavis from Coronation Street that Les Dennis used to do.

That said, I am only picking out of the two that we were asked about in the initial question on this thread. As everyone else seems to have gone a bit rogue (much like a contestant on Family Fortunes) then I'm going to say my top game-shows of all time:

1) Every Second Counts
2) The Chase
3) Big Break
4) Strike It Lucky
5) Take Your Pick
