I am so loving the lefty tropes coming out since Labour's defeat. The latest one: They lost because of a Murdoch media conspiracy. The lead was of a magnitude that to do that would be foolish. Everything factors in though. The written press was hugely against Miliband and didn't pull any punches. There is no Murdoch 'conspiracy' because it's transparent, it was all opinion, no news. The day before the election the first 'ten' pages of the Sun were anti Labour without exception. They also printed you'd be better off 'letting Jimmy Saville babysit your kids' than voting for Labour. UKIP got it in the neck a lot too due to worries about splitting the vote, but it's hard to trump telling the public that voting for a specific party is worse than a leaving your kids with a pedo.

Sorry mate, but you are seriously deluded if you believe the media have little influence on people's views and outlook when it comes to voting. Sorry mate, but you are seriously deluded if you underestimate the common sense of the majority of the electorate. We're all influenced by multiple factors, some factual, some distortions. A vote isn't a Mensa exam. The reality is that whether Labour or the Tories are in power, people haven't gone through the Krypton Factor before casting their vote.

Does anyone know why the last 2 elections were 5 years apart and the previous 2 4 years?
Previous elections were up to the discretion of the incumbent Government. They could call an election anytime they wanted within the 5 year limit. Obviously, Governments would wait for the optimum moment to call one when they thought their stock was highest. Very much a game of poker. When Tony Blair stepped down and let Brown in as PM, 2 years into his term; there was strong speculation that Brown, for credibility and fairness as he was unelected by the country, would call an election to get the mandate of the people. He was in his honeymoon period with the public and would almost certainly had won. He decided not to. Roll on a year, and the banking crisis and suddenly his popularity plummeted; so he stretched out his term to the 5 year limit in the hope that his fortunes could turn. He must look back on his decision not to go to the country in 2007/8 and kick himself. I'm quite happy to kick his fat arse if he wants the job done properly. The guy was a tool (like many Labour leaders before and after him) and would have lost whenever he called the election.

I don't agree that Britain has "turned right". But - without wishing to get involved with all the sniping (can we not give that a rest now please? I find it very tiresome) - I think the election proves that Britain will simply not elect a leftist party. Labour chose Foot over Healey and failed in 1983. Kinnock's "alternative" (despite moving rightwards as time went on) was roundly defeated in 1987 and 1992. Blair won elections for Labour because he recognised that people are happy for you to spunk money as long as you get the right tone on business and aspiration. The Greens are as left-wing as they come. Even in a PR system they get about 25 seats. UKIP would get 82. Labour used to get in because a lot of people had socialist views. But the country has moved on. It is more prosperous. It is more consumerist. Apart from a small fringe (not more than 5-10%) it is not interested in the tired old lefty tropes of bashing the rich and class war. The old Left is on its way out. It needs to reinvent itself if it wants to survive.
