If you ever want to see a grown man cry and throw a fit just keep an eye on Farage if we got rid of St George, St David, St Andrew and make this chap the patron saint of the UK - Benedict of Nursia.

Best demonstration of 'Englishness' would be for the government to announce it was sending significant resources to save lives in the Med.

That would make me proud.

what would make me proud, is if we stopped going to war with countries for monetary gain in the form of oil gas etc, and instead went after th etin pot war lords in Africa that steal aid, and kill there own people, then they wouldnt feel the need the need to go on homicidal boat journeys.

Given the recent performances of British governments actually spending those resources would be better.

It's mainly because of those wars we started/joined in with that there's so many people from Iraq, Syria, Libya, etc who are risking their lives to get to Europe.

Your point about warlords in the likes of Somalia is fair, although we will never go after them because, as you point out, there's no oil there.

Quote becky at 23 Apr 2015 9.41am

KING HENRY V
Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit
To his full height. On, on, you noblest English.
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof!
Fathers that, like so many Alexanders,
Have in these parts from morn till even fought
And sheathed their swords for lack of argument:
Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you call'd fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeoman,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base,
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit, and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry, England, and Saint George!

Happy St. Georges Day

The really English thing about St Georges Day is that we English don't really do it. So I'd rather shelve the forced and backward looking nationalism and look to the future

The British

Take some Picts, Celts and Silures
And let them settle,
Then overrun them with Roman conquerors.

Remove the Romans after approximately 400 years
Add lots of Norman French to some
Angles, Saxons, Jutes and Vikings, then stir vigorously.

Mix some hot Chileans, cool Jamaicans, Dominicans,
Trinidadians and Bajans with some Ethiopians, Chinese,
Vietnamese and Sudanese.

Then take a blend of Somalians, Sri Lankans, Nigerians
And pakistanis,
Combine with some Guyanese
And turn up the heat.

Sprinkle some fresh Indians, Malaysians, Bosnians,
Iraqis and Bangladeshis together with some
Afghans, Spanish, Turkish, Kurdish, Japanese
And Palestinians
Then add to the melting pot.

Leave the ingredients to simmer.

As they mix and blend allow their languages to flourish
Binding them together with English.

Allow time to be cool.

Add some unity, understanding, and respect for the future,
Serve with justice
And enjoy.

Note: All the ingredients are equally important. Treating one ingredient better than another will leave a bitter unpleasant taste.

Warning: An unequal spread of justice will damage the people and cause pain. Give justice and equality to all.

Benjamin Zephaniah

Late to the party (very late) but isn't AC Milan's St. George's Cross to do with them being set up by Englishmen, rather than a Milanese affiliation with George?
