How long do you actually go back for these 'state' apologies ??

Should we as a nation be parading outside every Scandinavian embassy demanding apologies for the Vikings murdering, raping and pillaging, taking slaves, burning monasteries and giving us the city of Newcastle and its whingeing inhabitants ???

If so - I am soooooo there...

Recent studies indicate that not much of this actually went on on account of the Vikings tended to take their families with them......a tit-bit remembered from a recent documentary although i can remember not which one....

I bet that's made up...'Bjorn, we are popping over to Northumbria for a tear up with they Saxons and a bit of the old raping and a pillaging..do you think I should take Helga and wee Rolf ???'

I imagine Helga as a huge and imposing blonde lady well aware of what goes on on these 'boys bonding trips' and resolute that her and wee Rolf will be coming!

The Greeks want us to apologise and send back the Elgin marbles .... If they find out we also took the conkers they will be livid.

The French should also apologise for putting an arrow in Harold's eye, plus a bit of compo.

Apologising for something 100 years ago, under a far different regime.

Ridiculous.

Here is a video of System of A Down playing their first ever show in Armenia.
They are all of Armenian descent and embarked on a tour named 'Wake up the souls' in the search for justice for these people.

There are 3 short comic-book style videos that are commentated by Tom Morello throughout the gig. May be of interest to some.

Its terrible that our country hasn't accepted it as a genocide, yet Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland have.

No it's not, it's nothing to do with us.

True, although that doesn't really mean we cannot comment on a genocide. Politicians have generally been quite keen on judgements against other countries and their actions.

Then again where does Armenia stand on the Blair / Iraq situation.

We can't comment, as we weren't there.

Exactly, and that c*** is still alive to get.

The logical implications of that statement render it inert.

On whether it was a genocide or not. Stop posting like a moron.

Turkey does seem to be hung up on the Semantics between Mass Killings and Genocide. I mean when you're force marching civilians to their deaths, indulging in a bit of robbery, rape and forced labour on route, its important to draw a distinction between state sanctioned mass murder and genocide. They had their death camps, concentration camps and everything.

When you're drowning, poisoning people and burning them on mass, its an important difference.

Of course the British government don't want to recognize it, due to their own Imperial concentration tactics during the Boar War (and in any number of counter-insurgencies run by empire, such as in Kenya).

Blood on the hands of those in power, who always get away with it. Just like Blair will.

Weren't some important people in Turkey commemorating something else that happened a hundred years ago? Ridiculous?

Do I have to apologise to my mate Tunji for slavery 200 years ago or am I exempt?

Apologising might be the wrong turn of phrase, its a bit late in the day to apologise, given everyones dead who was involved. But then maybe accepting that the systematic relocation of Undesirables to concentration camps, and then death camps, with a good deal of murder, rape and robbery on the side, is a genocide.

Some of the kings of England were Vikings!

No, because whilst we profited, we were at the spear head of actually putting an end to slavery, before it was seen as unprofitable (slavery really isn't suited to Industrial society). Most of the others were only anti-slavery once the aggricultural boom of the US was dying out.

Apparently those Vikings were a fairly liberated lot - There are stories of women, and kids, going on a Vike (raid, vikings aren't a people, its a term meaning to raid). They also appear to have been a bit rude with the Monks....

Which kind of circles back does it not ?

We dont need Blair to apologise for slavery in the same way we wouldn't expect the current generation of Germans to apologise for the holocaust as those generations bear absolutely no responsibility for the aberrations of the past do they ??

Quite correct. But surely in the case of Turkey its not about apologising, its about recognising it happened. Pretty sure the Germans even have laws covering Holocaust denial.
