One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest

To Kill a Mockingbird

Enjoyed both books, but preferred the films. Maybe because I saw the films first and Gregory Peck and Jack Nicholson owned the part.

So the other way on that one.

I think the film does the novel a huge disservice - agree with Peck though he owns the movie, but the subtlety and the nuances that move the story along in the novel just gets thrown away in the movie and become just stilted little 'set plays' and it just quickly becomes a bit of a courtroom drama based on the racial prejudice of the south - the book is sooooo much more than that

Don't give up 'jaws'. The word 'v@gina' is mentioned later. First time I ever saw it in print aged 11. Naughty stuff back then.

Usually adaptations to the screen lack the depth of the book, and in order to truly excel need to be based on very poor source material or be excellent adaptations.

Apocalypse Now is actually better than Conrad's, admittedly very good novella.

True Blood as a series far exceeded the frankly s**t books.

The Godfather I+II is actually cheapened by a very poor throw away book.

Nothing Lasts for Ever - Was remade as the first Die Hard movie.

The Shinning - Whilst there is a lot more to the book and the characters are more well rounded, it suffers from Stephen King ten thousand page overload, and lacks the vision of Kubrick and Nicholson.

Goodfella's is better than the book, but its actually not a bad book per se, it just 'pops' more as a fictional movie based on an informants story..

The Exorcist - Good novel, better movie.

Children of Men - PD James foray into Science Fiction isn't all that good but its interesting enough to help spawn one of the best dystopian movies in the genre.

Also the TV series Game of Thrones is actually a lot better than the books, something even the author agrees.

Requiem for a Dream / Last Exit from Brooklyn - I love Hubert Selby jnr's novels, but both of these exceed even his ability to translate the bleakness of the world and its careless horror.

First thing I thought of was Last Exit (To Brooklyn though JM - you're going the wrong way ). The film would've been easy to mess up (it's so controversial that it would have a viewers market whatever the quality) but it nailed it I think. Seriously bleak.

I've said my piece on Requiem a couple of times before. No need to stir up old wounds

Possible shouts for films better then the books could arguably be ...
Carrie
One flew over the cuckoos nest
Ghost World

There's others like Perfume & Fear and Loathing where I think the film did the best job it could, but possibly should never had been attempted in the first place.

Of course, there's lots of classics (Shakespeare, Dickins, Austin etc) that have been made into superb films - although it would take a brave man to say they're better than the novels

I read Peter Benchley's Jaws book many years ago and thought it was really good. There's a lot of factual information in there about the science of sharks, as far as I can recall.

The film was great until the very end when Pennywise was revealed in his true form.......a giant plastic spider.

For me books better than films:
Virtually every Stephen King book (especially Needful Things, Dark Half and Pet Semetary).
I quite liked the Shining but the Kubrick film did miss a lot of important detail and Stephen King hated it.
A Clockwork Orange (the film totally missed the main point of the book).
The Hunger Games. The books are amazing (IMO). The films are almost as good but you're left there wondering what happened to some of the story.

Films better than books:
Trainspotting. I love Irvine Welsh but I thought the film flowed better and made more sense than the book. It was turned more into a storyline by the film. Still a good book though.
