Now that we've signed Bamford on a season-loan deal do we need to buy a permanent striker(such as Austin or Destro) or do we keep Gayle and see if he is up to the challenge? I see no point in hanging onto Campbell as he isn't good enough nor young enough to improve.

Neither Gayle nor Campbell is young enough to suggest there will be a lot of improvement at this point, although Campbell is older. By the time you reach 25, you are what you are. I would keep Campbell, personally. He is a better all around player and, since neither will start, that makes him more useful coming off the bench as he can replace a variety of roles if someone is injured. Also, while I know CPFC supporters are unimpressed, the fact is we haven't seen the best of him and he does have pedigree. I also think Gayle needs to start and he's not going to do that at Palace. For his own sake and that of his career, he needs to go to a club with a system that will make the most of him. Lastly, Gayle will command a much bigger fee than Campbell and we could use the money elsewhere while we won't get much in for Frazier. This doesn't really boil down to who I think is the better player in abstract terms. More what I think is best for everyone involved taking a lot of things into consideration.

Surely Gayle is the one to prefer coming off the bench late on if we need a goal? Much more of a goal threat. Campbell did ok last season in the little game time he had, but surely the 4 strikers we want in our match day squad should be Murray, Gayle, Bamford and a new 1st choice striker to be brought in? (We'll list Cham as a midfielder!)

Well argued point Syd.

true if we disire the money more or need it for investment elsewhere, not sure if we do need the wonga, but your def right for Gayles point of view, he needs to move on asap.

unless of course by the signing of Cabeye Pardew feels we can play with two central midfielders rather than three and play with two strikers, i'd advise Gayle to move on...

In terms of a new first choice striker, maybe N'Doye (relatively speaking!) wouldnt cost a fortune and would still allow us to splash the cash on a new first choice CB?

Agree with Syd however I feel that it's a shame that in my opinion we have never got to see Gayle 's full potential, he briefly shone in that spell at the beginning of last season but was dropped without seeming to do much wrong when Pards came in.. for me it's a case of what if?

It's funny how many people seem to forget that we have a striker called Chamakh on our books...

Like I say in my post, I'm seeing him as a midfielder. He's gotta be scoring more than a couple a season to be considered a viable option up front.

I would now honestly, and probably against most people on here, be very surprised if we brought in another striker unless Gayle goes.

With Murray, Bamford, Gayle, Campbell, (Chamakh, Bolasie) in a system of one upfront, particularly with the midfield behind it, there's enough goals there. To me, signing Bamford is admitting that we don't fancy paying £15m for Austin, aren't getting Remy and don't fancy anyone else out there in the market.

Probably focus on signing a CB and keeper and wait until another window for the striker, which may mean waiting until Chelsea decide that they can't keep Remy and Bamford on their books.

Yep agree with this, think we should spend a bit of money on a new CB and keeper and save the striker hunt til next season, or jan if we're desperate. I'm happy with the options we currently have.

For the record, I agree with syd also re Gayle/Campbell

There is comment about youth. Mr Bamford is 21. Surely some young eagles are ready for first team game time - or playing in Germany. I hope this season reveals a lot.
