Hi Guys , hope you chaps don't mind me invading your space for some information . I'm a long standing Forest fan who is a sponsor of one of our own forums . Now to the nub of my reason for registering on here . There is a lot of debate on whether Dougie is doing an acceptable job in managing our club , not at all an easy task given we're under a transfer embargo due to breaching FFP rules . His signings have of neccessity all been frees or loans with a max salary of £10K per week.

I seem to recall when he was your manager that he signed / developed the nucleus of your team that achieved promotion whilst operating on a tight budget . Is this correct ?. Indeed how many of " his Players " are still with you today ?

Given the circumstances under which he operated do you think he did a good job ?. I realise that he left you under acrimonious circumstances for Bolton ( how he must regret that decision today ) so this may be reflected in your opinions ...

Generally speaking how would you describe your style of play under his management ...

THanks very much in advance for your reply's guys and good luck for the rest of this season ..

We can all look back with rose tinted glasses because he left us whilst we were at the top of the league. He is also a fans favourite from his playing days.
But that apart I personally don't think he would still be with us now. He's still wet behind the ears in regards to being a manager and still learning.
I loved him as a player but will never forget how he walked out on us for money and a 'bigger club'
In regards to his managerial style I thought considering he plyed his trade as an attacker, he set us up quite defensively.

He brought in some brilliant signings on next to nothing. Bought Bolasie for about £3.50, Glenn Murray on a free, Ward for hardly anything, Delaney on a free, Jedinak on a free and helped develop Zaha into being sold to Man U for £15million.

Having said that, he played boring football and only really seemed to do well when he was politely asked to start attacking by the owners.

I thank him for what he did but am glad he went as we probably would be in the Championship now if he was still here.

The manner in which Freedman left sours his legacy somewhat, but there is no denying the massively positive effect he has had on the club in its present standing.

As always-an-eagle refers to, his style of football was mostly defensive, focusing more on avoiding defeat and hoping to sneak a 1-0 win. This was very much his initial approach, having taken the job with one objective: avoid relegation to League 1. It wasn't pretty to watch, but he managed it. However, there didn't seem to be much progression in his style - it was almost like he stuck to this style even once we were safe and comfortably midtable. Apparently, and who knows how much truth there is in the story, but Parish and the owners took Dougie to one side in the carpark after one particularly dull performance and said something along the lines of, "Play more attacking football, or you're out."

As stated, who knows how true it is, but there was definitely a distinct improvement in style after the 'talk': players like Zaha and Bolasie had their shackles removed and it was genuinely a treat to watch.

Memory is a little fuzzy, but one of Dougie's biggest attributes from his time here was his ability to spot a gem and polish them up - and that probably suits your current predicament perfectly. Jedinak, Bolasie, Murray (now left, of course), Ward and Delaney were all Freedman purchases with a combined cost of less than a million.

He's still a little green, but I'd give him time.

Many thanks for the reply's so far guys . His signings for us , given the financial constraints , have all been much better than could have been expected . He does seem to have an eye for a player and an extensive knowledge of the European " market " ..

Where most of the voices of discontent are concerned is with his style of play , solid , defensive , sometimes dour , happy with a 1-0 rather than look for more goals ... Given that we've had our 2 best strikers (Assombalonga and Fryatt ) out injured all season then maybe his negative approach is understandable ????.

His remit from our owner seems to have been to reduce the wage bill ,comply with FFP regs and stabilise the club . He has undoutedly achieved these objectives but at the expense of dour football .. Hopefully when the aforementioned strikers are fit again ( ??? February )then the shackles will be removed .. Time alone will tell.

I personally don't question that he did a good job in his tenure. I wonder how long we'd have lasted at the top but it's easy to say that when you can't be proved wrong or right.

I have/have had various gripes about him and in particular the way in which he left, but in answer to the very specific question, he did a good job I think.

I might be wrong but I have a feeling that most of his signings have been on 'Loan; ie Williams,Trotter,Mendes,Ebicilio,O'Grady,Oliveira,Barrow,Akpom etc.

The team he put together and the style he played meant that Tony Pulis could come in and keep us up as the team were already schooled in a Pulis' style. We have a lot to thank him for but it looks a bit like he got a little lucky and hasn't been able to repeat anything like that since. It now seems he's an average Championship manager.

When one looks at his signings at Bolton, it doesn't appear that he had a great deal to spend given that many were 'Loan' signings. And of course Bolton's financial woes have been well documented. At Nottm For at the present time he is also operating under financial contraints.

No you're not wrong Willo , excepting Mills and Ward all his signings this season have been loans ..
He simply could not have spent a penny due to the FFP embargo even if our owner wished to give him it ...

Personally speaking I think the guy has performed extremely well in getting the players he has , but , and there's always a but , the football could have been a tad more attractive !!!

It's worth noting that he took over from George Burley who had us playing an open, passing game. So open in fact that we were bottom of the table and had just lost 0-3 at Millwall when GB was fired.

DF came in and made us harder to beat. He played a defender in front of the back 4 and we were grinding results out. It wasn't pretty but we stayed up.

When he left us, we were top of the table and playing some great football.

He was succeeded by Ian Holloway.

Now there is one you want to steer clear of !
