Almost all of our EXPORTS are to the EU

Much of what we export would never be saleable in the UK as it is not to our tastes

Without exporting those elements of the sheep, each individual sheep would no longer be financially viable.

So apart from neck, shoulder, ribs, loin, sirloin, leg, breast, flank and lovely shanks - which is the bit we have to export to make this economic?

This was not discussed in the lecture.

Animals tend to be full of stuff

I am guessing offal, brains, pe*nises, testicles, skin, feet, tails, tongues and multiple wibbly bits.

Importantly they prefer different cuts of meat that would not sell for a good price in the uk.

Lambs liver and kidneys are delicious and I thought that most of the wibbly bits went into pet food

We'll never know as this wasn't discussed at the lecture, sadly.

Pet food is a last resort. Pays very low. Doing some research it looks like some cuts of meat sell for a good price in the EU but are almost unsaleable in the uk.

So when you said "If there is a no deal Brexit, sheep and beef farming will immediately become untenable, especially sheep", the evidence is a bit thin.

Can you read?

Support drops by 75% in an industry dependent on it

And 97% of exports cease overnight

How is that thin evidence?

A further point is that the cost of labour will go up and the seasonal workers upon which farming relies may no longer be able to come from abroad.

But of course analysis and expertise count for nothing over self confidence.

I suggest you buy a new calculator. I make it just over 70 percent

As a fellow pedant, you are correct I was 5% out.

It doesn’t change the fact almost all of our sheep exports are to the EU, would cease in April and there will be a mass exit from sheep farming in advance of that. If new markets can be found ‘sometime in the future’ the supply won’t be in place. There is no slack to sustain weeks let alone years of negative profit.

I am a staunch remainer and even I don't think there will be such a cliff-edge. Reduce; possibly substantially; but completely disappear?

You just have to look at the wierd, genetic freak livetsock in countries like Germany to see why the best meat is sourced from this country. The high end market will stay. However, we might lose the lucrative dog food/kebab/burger end of the deal.
