How "Wild West" with Will Smith didnt win at least best motion picture in its day is a travesty of a sham, racism at its worst.

I mean look what it was up against.

Shakespeare in love
Life is beautiful
Saving Private Ryan

How it didnt even get a single nomination is shocking.

It is in the nature of minorities to complain of prejudice whether it is justified or not. The stronger the lobby the more we are forced to pander to them since they vote and politicians love votes and hate bad publicity.
Some would argue that certain minorities have had their voices heard more than others because they are well represented in the media and entertainment industry.

It may well be, but there isn't really any objective evidence for either. Sport careers tend to be a great option for escape from the more impoverished classes of society. Add to that the tendency of the slavery period to be an evolutionary fast track for the passing of physical traits, as well as poverty during that period to naturally select towards physical traits, is probably more significant in the tendency towards a predominance of black athletes in the US.

Of course, there are a lot more white actors than black actors. Given the history of the Oscars its absurd to consider them to actually be racist - Arguably the movie industry is far less biased than other areas of the US in terms of employment.

But really its just comedy. The reality of boxing is that its hard to think of many Heavy and Superheavy weight boxing champions that are white, during my lifetime.

But Raging Bull was not about heavyweights from your lifetime. It was a film about a white Italian American heavyweight who fought predominately (but not exclusively) other white heavyweights.

To have a black Rocky Marciano - now that would be science fiction!

If I were Lenny Henry I'd bring out a film and sing the movie soundtrack! With all the "it's because I'm black" crap this year he's a shoe in to get nominated for an Oscar and a Brit! While he's at it if he wanted to become a manager of a premier league club................

I think that's a bit unfair, however it is in the interest of minority groups to maintain their relevance and create issue, where there may not be a specific problem.

Black rights movements are very well established in the US, and well supported financially. Maintaining that profile requires remaining a) relevant in the public consciousness b) the survival of prejudice in society. Like any political group, survival is dependent on appeal to the public.

So when you have a situation where no black actor is nominated, it becomes a pick up issue for some of those groups, irrespective of whether its actually a race issue or coincidence - and of course its not in their interest to investigate - its the publicity they want, because that's how their organisation survives (like all political groups). A consequence of this is that other groups then have to take a stance.

Politics isn't about facts, its about peoples perception of the facts, and the 'race issue' is very big business among civil rights groups. Obfuscation of the reality to present a cause is the lifeblood of US politics.

British film, nominated for an Oscar, it'll need to be funded and produced by a big studio. Its notable that for all the talk about race and Oscars, xenophobia and Oscars is a much more relevant issue.

You might get a look in... but truly, you could re-invent cinema, and never be nominated

I was thinking more of the Rocky films. Raging Bull was biographical - Also Raging Bull is a great film, Rocky is a franchise that starts 'pretty good' and rapidly descends into turgid s**te.

OK just a quantum unfair. But what is a thread without controversy?

We pretty much agree here but your talent for expression and analysis is, as ever, impressive.

Erm. The recognised heavy weight champ has been white since the year 2000 if I'm not mistaken. Klitchko and then Fury.

Pretty much. I thought the science fiction comment about Rocky was Tony Bellew's character having the moniker of "pretty".

A British actor won best supporting, a Swedish actress won best supporting, a Mexican won best director an Italian won best score, a Brit won best song.

Other than best actor & actress all the individual awards went to foreigners.

I thought that was meant to be an ironic nickname.

I hope so.

I'd say the biggest fiction in the franchise is that Rocky can box.
