i was walking along this evening near South Croydon Travelodge when a family pulled up in a car and asked if I could help them.

They explained that they wanted to stay at the Travelodge and had been in and found out rooms were available but apparently the receptionist could not take cash from them and they had to either phone the central booking line or book via Internet.

They said they did not have a working mobile phone and could I book for them. I looked it up and saw it was £79 a night - I got £80 cash off of them and paid through PayPal.

I did not let them use my phone and I got the cash so all should be ok. I am now a bit worried this is an elaborate scam but maybe I am worrying unnecessarily?

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

Did you book it in your name with your details?

Seems a bit strange that they couldn't pay. I'm sure you can walk in and pay on the day.

If it's your name then only thing that could go wrong is they trash the room or smoke in it etc.

Or the cash they gave you is fake? Apart from that everything should be fine.

You could have a problem if they trash the room.

Or they use the room to cut up a cadaver.

I just googled Travelodge and you can pay by cash if you can prove who you are

I am guessing these people did not want anyone knowing who they are. I strongly recommend you contact Travelodge and fast. Did these people look in any way suspicious?

Did you book in their name? Or did they take your name?

On a side note, I had a surreal experience a few months back. An Irish sounding couple pull up next to me at about 10 at night. I'm walking, they're in a car.

They hand me their phone and ask me to google automatic gates. Very odd. Only thing I could think of is they couldn't write. Still confused now thinking about it.

Unless you checked ID my advice remains the same.

Wondering if they have some sort of card reading software in their vehicle which can pick up your phone. Sure I saw something like this on watchdog or such like a while ago

I'm going to go with, probably.

The real question is why leave yourself open to the angst of even wondering?

Cash is king, if they can't back up their ID then something is fishy.

Optimistic as ever

He used PayPay though so wouldn't have even needed to get his credit card out, and even if he'd typed the number in everything would be encrypted.
