The reason, and I'm answering other posters in this sentence but the discussion is a follow up to several, Dann played and got injured and for that matter Delaney played and nearly got injured is that Tomkins is injured and we have have 3 centre halves. This is not a criticism but a fact. We also only have 6 defenders plus fryers so you can answer with that if Kelly or Ward got injured.

I'm sorry but we're paying for not backing up the squad enough already. I didn't expect us to be fully backed up with 2 players for every position, but when it was an obvious concern we paid for inadequate backup in midfield last 2nd half of the season it was also obvious this Summer there might be a problem in defence and also attack. Forwards can cost in the £15 mil bracket so if you don't get what you really want, Remy who is proven but not full primed I understand. Hopefully he'll be ready before Benteke maybe cannot play for what I hope will be very temporary.

But it is obvious, Souare car crash or not, because he could be injured himself so that isn't an excuse, 6 defenders isn't enough, and an unready or ready when he has to play at RB Flamini and makeshift LB in Ledley will both stretch things in a midfield that was a concern to begin with.

You need to look a bit further than what you think Rudi.We have the same amount of defenders currently as we had in the squad for the second half of last season.

Dann....Delaney....Tomkins....Ward....Souare....Kelly ....Fryers.

That is 2 LB's 2 RB's 3 CB's (with Kelly able to play anywhere across the back)

You then have 10 in midfield,an area of concern as well according to you and out of those you have Ledley who is left footed and Flamini who is right footed both of whom have experience of playing at full back off their respective stronger foot.Take those 2 away and you are still left with Cabaye and McArthur as DM's and they are arguably our strongest pairing anyway. You then obviously have our attacking midfield players and the 5 lads in the squad who would be classed as forwards.Appiah and Cambell are included and perhaps that could be seen as a spot wasted not withstanding the fact that it was scoring goals that let us down last season.

My point is when you look at that squad on paper and the options it gives you at the back and in midfield in my opinion it looks a very strong group of players and one that should comfortably see it through till January. When you consider we have strengthened in the areas we all knew we needed to and left some cash to spend in the mid season window.

You can hang around waiting for Mandanda to make a howler then come on here and bin him off but face facts, Steeeeeeev is miles ahead of the leek muncher.

1. typo - you know what I meant (aren't you clever!).
2. how have I had a go at Mandanda? I've only seen him once so to say I haven't yet formed an opinion is a fair comment. Certainly fairer than your racist comment!

Because all our decent youngsters are out on loan. The only ones who could conceivably have been involved are Dreher, Wynter and Randall Williams. All very well for Pardew to praise Southampton's Academy and how they always have youngsters coming through - perhaps he should try playing ours occasionally.

Yeah keep them locked up at Beckenham for the year and just let them out for mickey mouse cup games, that will really help their education. When I read comments like this I just imagine a Mr Magoo type of bloke that used to sit behind me and my old man when I was a kid and all he would ever shout was "Get in to em Palace get in to em" at the top of his voice for the entire 90 minutes.Clueless but he got his moneys worth

Right, I was at the game last night and I'll give a breakdown of what I thought were positives and negatives:

Positives
- We're out of the EFL Trophy, which is good given how thin our squad so painfully obviously is.
- Hennessey had a very good game, which is always positive.
- Fan-wise, we were too notch last night; sang most of the game (unlike the s*** Saints fans, who I was very disappointed with), gave some very good banter and turned out in similar numbers as the home fans.

Negatives
- Our fringe players are terrible, and Sako, Mutch and Fryers (and preferably Wickham) need to leave.
- It's horribly obvious that our squad is too thin, and that it's even more infuriating that Boateng etc. have gone on loan.
- Scott Dann is f***ing injured in a f***ing pointless game.

Overall, we might as well have forfeited, despite that, I actually had a good time as our fans actually bothered in creating an atmosphere.

Hang on. There is a limit of 25 players to a squad. You seem to be saying that we don't have enough defenders, midfielders or attackers?

Please advise where you got this information from. I have not seen any withdrawal of a Europa League place for the League Cup winners. All reports indicate to me that winning this competition still gets you through to the third qualifying round.

10 in midfield has got to be a typo. I'd say we have 4 prem able middle of midfielders. Cabaye, Jimmac, Ledley and Punch who would then leave a whole at number 10 and Flamini who isn't ready. So that's 4 plus 1 for 2 positions or 3 positions which we are really counting if you play 3 or even 4-2-3-1 or similar seeing as we always do. 5 players for 3 positions and 6 players for 4 defensive positions. Maybe cutting it fine and telling Lady Luck nah we'll take our chances again. Maybe, just maybe, we are 1 defender short and 6 is not enough. I'd be interested to know how many other clubs cross their fingers on injuries in areas they're fully aware of and not just once.

P.S - I don't and I cannot accept anyone counting Fryers as a 7th defender. He is one mistake we cannot correct.

Do you think we're fully equipped then in defence?

It's still a bullsh1t competition to English teams because of the money in the prem and btw if the money wasn't in the prem we wouldn't be able to compete in the Europa league after giving it a go.

A group stage at this stage of the season would kill us unless we had 25 top quality players. We'd be certain for relegation.

How much of the terribleness of our fringe players is down to a lack of match practice and now that we are out of the EFL Trophy they will get even less so if asked to step up for a League game they will be even more rusty

I'd say that any more than one of those in the side and we will notice the drop in quality far too much. I was in the Wickham camp but I don't know what's got to him. Maybe knowing he won't get a sniff as long as Benteke is playing or it's the final minutes and we're desperate but that header from Hennessey's kick he was muscled off the ball for didn't look good. Not to mention the knife through butter moment from centre circle to in on goal in 2 passes.

That is a very good point, but I think the fact we still had to play Dann and Zaha shows our squad depth is limited. The players who suffer from the lack of games in our squad aren't good enough for us (Fryers, Mutch and Sako). The only people who lose out are the youngsters, which Pards has made clear he doesn't want to play.
