i've seen more than one vacancy at the same company which i'd be interested in Do you think I should apply for both or does it smack of desperation? Do you think it would count against me? I mean should I just home in on one position as the employer might think I am just throwing my hat in the ring for everything?

Even big companies have small HR departments and if you apply for 2 quite different jobs, it suggests you don't have a clear idea of what you want to do. If they are quite different roles, apply for the more senior one. If the company think it's a bit of a stretch for you, they may consider you for the more junior one. But unlikely it would work the other way. If the roles are similar, apply for the one you like best. Good luck & let us know how you go.

I applied for two at Plymouth Uni simultaneously. Got one. They said I hadn't needed to fill out two forms. I should have rang up and asked.

Go for both. Edge yr bets. Putting all your eggs in one basket never good (unless it's a really specialised skill) diversity never frowned upon IMHO.

I applied for two jobs at the same firm once and got both . They even paid me two salaries for 14 months before someone in wages realised and grassed me up. I was sacked on the spot ,but they still paid me one salary for a further 6 months before they asked me to go for an appraisal . I lost my bottle at this point and handed in my notice at which point they offered me a pay increase to stay . Unfortunately British rail track maintenance dosnt exist anymore though it will be interesting to find out what happened to my pension .,erm .
And we still need a striker |

It shows that you rate the company and want to progress within it.

Personally I would only go for one, unless they are very similar roles (or unless the company is big enough). It makes it very difficult to suggest you are committed to/interested in a particular role in the company if you are applying for more than one.

Say that you really want to work for the company and see it as a longterm career move and that you could offer lots to both roles. Why don't you give the HR dept a call and tell them you're applying for both jobs and explain why? What way you've already got an 'in' with the company and they'll be keeping an eye out for the CV. By the time it comes to your interview (if you get that far) you've already started a relationship with the company and will be ahead of many other applicants. If you really want the job, pull out all the stops and get it!
