We are now in the top 10 of Premier teams for possession stats which is great news, and shows how we are maturing as a team. I think the signings of Townsend & Benteke have helped, especially the way the ball sticks to Big Ben up front and then we can start attacks. Punch is also in great form which has helped us retain possession a lot more this season

Who cares about possession stats? The only stats that matters are goals scored/conceded. Sorry to shoot you down but possession stats are complete dross and i don't get the obsession.

Got any possession stats on Leicester for last season? I'm sure that will illustrate my point.

We stayed up for the first couple of seasons with possession averaging under 35%, it's what you do with the ball rather than passing it sideways, back, back, sideways etc. Most stats are useless as they don't give the full story so very much in agreement with you.

If you have the ball the opponents can not score. Winning games with 30% possession is not a good long term plan we were found out and I like the changes AP has made.

I care. It indicates a step up in how we play - that's all. It gives everyone (except you and a few others perhaps, greater confidence. It is just a stat, yes, just an indicator, but for hollers on here it means less hoofball and more football, and that is nothing to be negative about. Possession means options, hoofball means predictability, and only helped because of awesome wingplay last season, and when that was lost, we could not win a game. It means a lot. Don't be so negative mate.

If you have possession stats of 35% it suggests one thing; that you don't have particularly good footballers in the team. An effective system, organisation, team spirit for sure, but over time unsustainable.

You need to be able to control games (at least a bit) to seriously think about top 8; so whilst all stats only tell half a story, possession is a decent indicator that there are players who may be comfortable and confident on the ball and therefore able to dictate play.

Football's a lot more fun to watch when we've got the ball!

Not sure picking one of the great sporting anomalies in history and ignoring the evidence presented by Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Man City etc. is a great way of illustrating your point.

Over a long period of time, the more you have the ball the harder it is for the opposition to score, and it means your players are in control of the game and the tempo, rather than chasing around for large parts of the game.

Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time.

Well said.

The point is we are trying to progress as a team. And removing Leicester as an outlier, the top 8 or so teams over the last 5 years or so will be the teams who control possession.

This is because they have better footballers and control the ball.

This progression into a established football club, who people assume will be challenging for the top half, rather than struggling at the bottom half, is what Pardew/Parish are trying to achieve.

This. I feel like we've built ourselves a team that can really start to challenge the top half of the table, and if I'm being really optimistic I don't see any reason we can't finish where we are in the table now at the end of the season. While the teams above and below us might shuffle around within themselves, I don't see any teams that immediately stick out below us as ones who should be above us, with the same ringing true the other way around.
