I doubt either wanted their washing aired in public Nick. But as you've raised it, who should pay for the increase that is happening due to the £-$ slide?

Marmite is made in the UK, using ingredients sourced domestically. I don't see how the exchange rate affects the price. I think Unilever are taking the piss, and it would seem Tesco think so too.

Yep. It's good press for the supermarkets as Unilever are just trying to take advantage of the current situation and they've, quite rightly, called them out.

Think its the same with colmans mustard being sourced & made entirely in Norfolk. Unilever saw a chance to cash in & rightly got called out on it, fair play to Tesco.
The mountains are calling & I must go. |

Marmite was one of only a number of brands. And most of Unilever's operations are also not in the UK so they do have centralised costs incurred in €. But yes, with Marmite they were largely taking the piss. With the majority of the other products they have a legitimate complaint. Tescos have managed to flex their muscles and reach a compromise (there will be a supplier price increase, but it won't be as much as Unilever wanted).

Pretty obvious that prices are going to rise for anything that relies on importing goods and services with the state of the pound. The amount of head in the sand stuff around the knock on effects of the weak pound is astounding.

The £ has been massively over-sold - it'll pick up again when the markets realise we're not going to turn into Zimbabwe post-Brexit.

I hate Tesco. Multiple different ranges of their own brand products from Basic for a quid topping out at an extortionate fiver for a 'Finest' pizza. Why not just make a good quality pizza without the bullsh1t? Buy 1 get 2 free deals, and half price only on one specific flavour of the same product. Their whole business model annoys me. Basically shops on every street with nothing I want. They've got away with reducing quality AND increasing prices for years to keep their profits up but when you look at M&S' results you can see it's working.
