Talking of the Ramones, I loved their version of Needles and Pins. It didn't offer a lot that was new, but I still enjoyed it.

Sam Brown did a brilliant cover of Feel like marking love

But my vote goes to
A new England by Kristy McCall
Billy Bragg lyricist but not a singer

Notable mentions
Nothing compares to u by sinead o Connor
Diamonds by rhianna
Landslide by Dixie chicks

Nirvana _ Man who sold the world (as mentioned)
Muse - Streets have no name at Glasto
Florence - You got the love (Albert Hall I think)
Hendrix - Watchtower (as mentioned)

But this was recorded in space and is actually a damn fine version of Space Oddity by astronaut Chris Hadfield
Apparently he had to persuade them to let him take his guitar just for this and Bowie liked it
