My old workmate (and onetime Cohen roadie) Leif has written a lovely piece for his local paper.

RIP the Godfather of Gloom!

I'm glad that you posted that as I didn't want to stick out like a sore thumb by being the only one to admit that I didn't like his singing very much.

I can well understand that opinion. His true strength was his artistry with words - above all he was a poet. But he still made some beautiful music that we can all enjoy.

I watched an old interview with him on BBC News last night in which he said that he was a well respected poet but it didn't pay the rent so he took to singing in order to earn more money

My brother loved him and if I visited his house he was always playing his stuff.

I found it depressing tbh.... I like my music more up tempo.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Two years ago I won two front row tickets for his show in Sydney.
He was mesmerising as a performer. Rarely have I seen an artist who so clearly had the audience in the palm of his hand.

I count it as one of my all time great concerts.

His music and his poetry will endure. Although the voice will always grate on some.

I think I've decided that Cohen's later material and live interpretations are better than his earlier recordings. He never had a very good voice and the later lower growl that he developed is better to listen to contrasting with the backing vocals and more melodic instrumental.
