My old workmate (and onetime Cohen roadie) Leif has written a lovely piece for his local paper. Edited by nickgusset (11 Nov 2016 9.59pm)

Had a lot of fans but his musical style was not for me I'm afraid. RIP the Godfather of Gloom! I'm glad that you posted that as I didn't want to stick out like a sore thumb by being the only one to admit that I didn't like his singing very much.

His true strength was his artistry with words - above all he was a poet. But he still made some beautiful music that we can all enjoy.

I watched an old interview with him on BBC News last night in which he said that he was a well respected poet but it didn't pay the rent so he took to singing in order to earn more money

Two years ago I won two front row tickets for his show in Sydney. I count it as one of my all time great concerts. His music and his poetry will endure. Although the voice will always grate on some. R.I.P. LEONARD COHEN

I think I've decided that Cohen's later material and live interpretations are better than his earlier recordings. He never had a very good voice and the later lower growl that he developed is better to listen to contrasting with the backing vocals and more melodic instrumental.
