Hi all, first car I've got - had it for about 2 months. Live in Croydon and do about 35 miles a day on average. Car is showing as doing 14 MPG??? But the advertised MPG when I got the car was something like 65!! I knew not to expect 65 but 14?? Only reason I could think it would be bad is because I hate the A2 & tunnel approach and when I can I literally piss up and down the road just to get off it.

Could anybody think of a reason why i'd only be achieving 14MPG?

Thanks

Typically MPG advertised will be the best achievable. And if you are doing mostly inner-city/town driving then you'll never get close to the advertised results.

Also things like roof racks or unnecessary weight in the boot will also reduce your mpg.

Then on top of that the testing conditions under which the MPG numbers are prepared is questionable anyway so even if you drove in the perfect conditions without any extra impediments you still probably wouldn't match it.

Lol to be fair I've just had a chat with colleagues and checked my car. It says "14 MPH" so I think it's the average speed done in my car, which would make sense as most of my daily commute is fkin traffic!!!

You'll learn not to trust motor car manufacturers young fella.

But in my experience the Japanese produce the most reliable and cost effective cars.

I've had Honda CRV's for a couple of decades and they have been a joy to own.

I owned a Vauxhall Viva in 1975... it was a pile of crap, rusty and luckily I crashed it into a lamp post in Banstead one night.... the insurers paid out and I never looked back.

Thats the sort of thing my wife comes out with, Fairplay for admitting it. Little tip for using less fuel, Keep your tank filled up as much as possible.

Eh?

Surely a full tank = more weight.... therefore will use more petrol than say the same car with half a tank of petrol?

Have a look at Honest John where people input their real mpg and the website shows an average. It should be about 45mpg in your car

top marks for admitting that, i get customers into my showroom and point that sort of thing out and they still wont admit that there isnt a fault.

Tip:
Reset all the trip meters (usually two) on your car so everything shows as zero when you next fill up the car. Run at least one if not two full tanks through it (noting down how much fuel you actually put in from your petrol receipts), then take a look at the economy. should be much clearer.
Whilst new cars no longer need running in as such, the engine is still new and wont be as economical at day one as it will be in years to come.
Also, as others have stated, the suggested figures are just that, calculated in a laboratory not out on the road. Your style of driving, weather, road conditions, load in the car etc all contribute to the overall figures.
