Wilf has waited patiently for an England call up. In great form at present.

But yet again ignored and others preferred in front of him. Why?

He is lucky to have an alternative in the Ivory Coast so good luck to him.

Completely agree. If England had come calling - as they should have - he'd not be heading for AFCON with IC. He's waited patiently for a chance with England but it hasn't come and of course he wants to play international football.

I'll be gutted to lost him in January but our current plight isn't his fault. The management need to take the blame, not our best player who just wants to play at the highest level he can.

His club need him especially over the next ten weeks which will probably dictate how our overall season will fare. If he does go I hope at least it is with a heavy heart.

If we go down by one point there will be a lot of 'if only Wilf had stayed' 'why did he go?'

Basically, we need him more than ever right now and he should realise that and do the right thing. He always has the World Cup to aim for.

I think it will be more 'why didnt we shut up shop against Burnley' 'Why couldn't we hold on to a lead against swansea whilst in injury time'

They did come calling. He's already played twice for England. Switching allegiances cos you’re not currently getting picked shows how petulant he is and the fact that it will f*ck Palace over, just makes it worse.

Played twice in meaningless games then dropped. He's playing his best for years and still doesn't get a shout - I can understand his frustration and desire to play at international level.

Even if he dint want to play him all that t*** Southgate had to do was name him in the last squad. Let him know he was in his thoughts, then I'm sure Wilf would of waited, but as is the norm with England we obsess over what players can't do rather than what they can. England's loss, just wish Wilf had waited to see if someone else who wanted him was gonna get the job.

What's that got to do with it. It's a very poor standard of football.

He was brought up in Thornton Heath. Brought through the ranks at Palace. Represented England U19. Represented England U21. Became a full England International.

Just gets to the point where he deserves a regular place for England and when Palace need him the most, he f*cks off to Africa and all these English Palace fans say ‘good for you Wilf’, enjoy yourself mate’.

Hilarious. "Zaha is part of a financial investment and should behave as so, and leave nonsense like playing for an African team behind him" is what many here are spouting, no doubt the very same people who cry out "all they're interested in is their pay cheque and not playing for their countries honour" when the England team embarrass themselves time and time again.

Anyway, whilst we're heaping on the bad news, not that this will upset too many of you but Mali have also qualified for the competition so we'll be saying goodbye to Sako for a month as well. i.e. We will only have Townsend and Chungy to play on the wings.

We'll also be losing Pape Sou- oh wait, no.

This^^. If you weren't Palace fans do you think you'd be calling for him to play for England? Yes, he's been more consistent this season, but last season his goals/assists totals were the same as the much-criticised Sako. If he'd kept up his form then he might have got in next Spring.

Never mind. Get Kaikai back and try him or Randall Williams while Zaha and Sako are way.

How dare those Africans do anything that might affect the money making machine that is the Premier League...

We have been in the Premier League long enough now to have built a squad that can cope with this sort of thing.

Typical Guardian reader response . As A Daily mail /Express reader and member of UKIP I say good luck to the lad.

And we still need a striker

I like to think I'm as far removed from that demographic as possible, doesn't mean it's wrong to question why an international tournament that disrupts multiple leagues is held every 2 years. Obviously this thread is about how it affects us but there must be a lot of teams losing quality footballers for a month of the season. If he goes after the Swansea fixture on the 3rd February, and they make the final, he is likely to miss 5 games. Out of a 38 game season that is a significant chunk.

Surely even the most ardent liberals are allowed to be irritated by this. I mean, how happy would you be if they held the Euros in January. How much uproar was there when Fifa suggested holding the World Cup in January....

"Brighton are talking about how they're coming for us. And it's like, we've been waiting in the Premier League for you for ages." Wilfried Zaha, 2017.

I was brought up here and have always lived in the UK but I have dual citizenship and if I was Wilf and had been ignored by England, I'd do exactly the same as him before time ran out on me. It's a short career being a footballer and he can't be patient forever.

Good luck to the lad. He deserves a chance at international level and he doesn't choose when the AFCON is played.
