Really? Its all about opinions but i dont think he is better than Cabaye. More effective in that team tho.

Geoff could attack, defend, score a few goals, head the ball well, very consistent, strong in the tackle, hardly any mis-placed passes. He was very good.

Yohan is more about past reputation these days than actual product.

And i'm going out on a limb here but I reckon over 90% of Palace fans who saw Geoff at his best 88-93 who have him as he was then ahead of Cabaye if picking the team today.

I would be surprised if it was not 100%.

Seems wrong even mentioning Geoff Thomas in the same breath as our white elephant.

Whilst Cabaye has not been the player we imagined he would be I really do not understand the negativity towards him.

Yes he has had a few poor games in the past eighteen months but then so has every player in every team in every country.

As a midfielder he works tirelessly, rarely gives the ball away, is tenacious in the tackle, albeit overly so on occasions, can pick out a good long pass, gets up and joins the attack and has better vision than any other midfield player we have.

Unfortunately he seems to fall between two stalls in being neither the full on defensive or attacking midfielder we require. Good as he is defensively he is never going to be sitting in front of the back four all game. As a playmaker he tends to drop too deep on occasions so rarely makes his good runs in to the box regularly enough.

I think alongside a Jedinak type defensive midfielder is the best role he could play for us. This gives him the opportunity to go forward when he wants and drop back and help as necessary.

Were we to sell him I think that we would be lucky to get more than seven or eight million given his age. It is a shame because it has just not worked out as we, and I am sure he, would have hoped. Still though he is a damn good player and getting rid of him in January would, IMO, be lunacy.

I think our expectations were high as he was one of our first real show piece signings in our time in the Premier League. Possibly our first actually. When that happens fans expect to see the guy get MotM in every game and look about 10 yards quicker than everyone else on the pitch, especially as we probably perceived our squad at the time to be generally a fair bit lower in quality than a player like Cabaye. In reality though, that's not how most players are going to work out and that's what is causing people a bit of disappointment. This thread has made me analyse my own disappointment in him and in actual fact I only really have one criticism of him and that's that he seems to pull out of shots sometimes or dither on the ball in front of goal. But he's not a striker and I guess I can only compare him to Puncheon who usually seems willing to hit the ball at the goal whenever he gets a chance.

When this thread opened I actually thought that I'd love to see us sell him if we could get what we paid for him but actually I have changed my mind on that. I think he is a valuable player to keep but brings something different to the table than some of our other central midfielders. I think Pardew has even said that there are games when he needs a Ledley and games where he needs a Cabaye. We criticise a manager for having no plan B but he does at least recognise that the rotation of the central midfielders (both in the starting XI and the use of substitutes) allow us to tweak our approach to games.

I thought we were successful in the Championship because we were able to rotate players like KG, Moritz and Garvan to subtly alter our style of play and therefore we could often incrementally increase on defence or attack with only one substitution. I think the situation with McArthur, Ledley and Cabaye may prove similarly astute and at a multi million pound club in a rich top flight league, the transfer outlay we paid for Cabaye and his subsequent wages, are a drop in the ocean given the options he gives us.

All of the above is just my ill informed opinion as always.

There is at least one fan who doesn't think Geoff is better then Cabaye. There will be more. They are of course wide of the mark. Or they are too young to truly remember just how superb he was.

Thats not what i said. Cabaye is a more talented footballer. GT the ledg was more effective for us in the same way yohan was at Newcastle. Different styles of teams.

I just don't think he is. I think Geoff beats him on just about every attribute purely on their Palace games.

But as you said it is all about opinions. Who would you pick for Palace if it had to be one or the other?

So based on what Cabaye has done for Palace , not his past, what is Cabaye's style and how has it benefited Palace in any way ?

yohan is silkier and can dribble better. But Geoff was strong. a bit more like Gareth Southgate but more attacking.

he came from a different era of football...my favoured era tbf....where he put his foot in and wasn't afraid of anything much on the pitch.

yohan looks better on the ball and promises more than he actually does. with John's build moves and prowess he should be a barca type player. only trouble is he has let himself down. potentials there and he's still not too old...yet

still gotta keep him. strength in depth is required here so...

Thomas's impact on the club has been far greater than Cabaye's but the players today are so far technically superior and fitter than 25 years ago. Bear in mind Pardew survived top flight football despite being slow and having no left foot (remember "that's the part I like". In fact both his feet were pretty s***.

Also I recall Martyn being quite poor on crosses and some of his decision making being very iffy but the game wasn't analysed to the extent it is now.
