I remember watching 'survival sunday' at the Horns Tavern in West Norwood. Our relegation hung in the balance with on screen updates showing how the table looked at that minute...based upon other games across the country. heartbreaking, but that was my first relegation battle to live through. i do recall that season, we got a win at Selhurst and assumed it would put daylight between us and our rivals and then the stadium screen announced that all our relegation rivals got a win also. Or we got a loss and i thought, we are doomed....only to see all our rivals lose also. nutty season. For much of that season, Andy Johnson was the top scorer in the whole league. the only time i remember Selhurst being so quiet you could hear a pin drop was at the end of us vs Southampton. Both teams knew a draw was not good enough. After a deafening and feisty game, total silence from both sets of fans shuffling out the gates. our centenary...a bittersweet season. Dowie in the shiney tracksuit. a stupid tackle getting a red for Lakis against ManUre. And a certain unproven 'keeper from Argentina making the odd blunder to howls of horror from the Arthur Wait. Gabor's pyjamas. the palace crystals being a motley collection of children, overweight ones, lanky ones, and lacking in dance coordination. churchill insurance. Prince Harry in midfield. no HF behind the corner flag. us beating a liverpool team on the brink of them winning the champions league. memorable and living on the crumbs of a season was certainly visceral. After the Swansea game recently , the memories came back to haunt me. What are your memories ?
