Could we though? We need to be building on what we have and, at worst selling fringe players. We are not in a position where a line of quality footballers will be queueing round the block to join us. Plus there's just 12 days left.

That's actually quite worrying.

It does seem to be good business. £6 million profit on a 31 year old player is probably more than we could have hoped for.

I guess that selling Cabaye might give us the extra funds required to get three or four of the eight that we have apparently bid on over the line. If that is the case then it would seem to be a good move.

I am not so worried about the twelve days left, transfers seem to be like dominos nowadays. Thing don't start to move until towards the end of the window.

Welcome to the dark side

At 16 mill plus savings in salary up to next season, which really brings it to 20Mill, and the fact that the player is not irreplaceable makes it a no-brainer.

We might find a Geoff Thomas, Dave Madden or David Hopkin lurking somewhere for a quarter of the sale price. That's the kind we need by February if we are going to play like we look like we could stay up.

Thanks Kermit. Good to see you contemplating that we might stay up. I certainly agree with you on this one.

The distinction between selling Cabaye and where we were last night is that I don't think that Cabaye will make enough of a difference to keep us up, whereas the £16 million and £90k a week of wages might give us the extra financial breathing space we need to bring in the two or three players we need to give us the solid foundation at the back, the competition for places that our current team need, it would return our fringe players (Fryers for example) back to the fringes, and might give us the versatility to have a plan B when we need to change things around.

They may wish to buy him but only on the back of trying to get Payet who would be a much better deal, although more expensive for them. Can't see anybody else paying that type of money for him based on his time with us.

I'm very sceptical about this. I would imagine the Cabaye interest is false and created to persuade West Ham into accepting a more reasonable offer for Payet. It seems like Marseille have released this story to make West Ham feel like they will walk away from making a deal if they play hard ball.

Indeed. If we were keen to sell Cabaye we would be getting various offers. As it is it's only Marseille and there's no movement on it. Same with Chelsea and Benteke.
