My personal thoughts are that Townsend is quality. It's playing in a team that has no confidence that is hurting him. The two full backs aren't helping him enough in an attacking sense because of the lack of confidence in conceding a goal, which in turn had seen townsend do far too much defending which isn't his strong point hence the vicious cycle of making him look bad. If really like to see him play with a PVA or Jenkinson behind him who are comfortable in attack as well as defence. I think we'd regret him going to Newcastle, especially as he didn't cost us to much in today's market.

Townsend is obviously very talented but in reality isnt contributing much offensively to the team . If Big Sam wants to play 3 at the back and is prioritising stopping goals and achieving clean sheets, he urgently needs another CB. So in this sense a loan swop makes very good sense.

Quality players push on despite circumstances! Look at Wilf, he has really had to make an effort defensively and has looked our best player.

The trouble with Townsend is he doesn't get stuck in, he shys away from tackles and is too predictable in his play. I can see why he is a bit of a journey man, bright start yet flatters to deceive.

Personally if we could do a swap I think it would be good for both parties.

Much as I have concerns about Townsend's commitment and flexibility, if we do sign PVA it would make it more likely that he'd be able to provide cover/competition for Zaha on the right. His desire to cut in would give us an alternative approach if, for example, Zaha was being marked (or fouled) out of the game. If we're going for a loan swap, which seems unlikely from Sam's comments in the press conference, I'd prefer that it was like-for-like and not an attacker for a defender.

I'd like to see how he plays on the left with PVA backing him up.

I don't see the fascination with playing 3 at the back. That might suit PVA in a 3-5-2 but how do you fit Zaha in a that formation? Zaha is not a wingback. 3-4-3 with Zaha as one of the front 3 might work for Zaha but leaves the midfield woefully exposed.

Townsend is a one trick pony who should never have got into the England Team.
When we bought him I thought fair enough but so far he has done nothing to convince me that we should keep him

I don't know he is a one trick pony who cuts inside. Playing in the middle gets rid of the one thing he bases his game on.

I never expect these sort of deals to come off, but in this instance I do have my hopes up.
